Elvira Arellano, and undocumented immigrant from Mexico, "symbolized inhumane treatment of migrants to some and brazen lawlessness to others," has been deported to Mexico.

I read an interesting article about Elvira that was exploring the potential playout of this situation. Some say she might become the motivating force to kick start immigration reform. But opponents say she got herself in this mess: she was deported from the U.S. a while ago, before she was pregnant or had a son. And, they also say that if she wants to be with her son, she could take him to Mexico with her. Now, I don't know that that's a "solution", but it is a valid point...

Go on, grab our attention with a great titleI think a lot of people fail to realize that immigrants do the majority of the work in this country that Americans find unappealing. Who minds their children, washes their dishes in restaurants, picks their vegetables? How many American kids leaving college with degrees are willing to do that kind of labour. The US government makes it very difficult for people like Elvira to work in this country legally. Keep in mind that most people who do live and work here illegally also pay taxes to the US government, very few come here to subsist on welfare. I think they are unfairly undervalued for what they contribute to this society.

Very true SusanB! Being that my own mother is from Mexico; I have of course seen and experienced 1st hand all of the struggles she's underwent in order to simply put food on the table. Unfortunately, America cannot exist w/o a class of laborers who are considered to be beneath even the poorest. Since the foundation of this country, there have been many: indentured servants, slaves (most from various regions of Africa), early European immigrants, the Chinese, and many more. It just so happens to be that during this particular day and age, it's anyone from Latin America.
