email Overload -- Guess How Many I will have and WIN!!

Lately, I find the number of emails I get every day to be somewhat overwhelming, especially as I face the prospect of going on a vacation during which I have pledged not to check my email.

Spam is not the problem, either. I am as good a Rules writer as anyone, but I still find the stack daunting. Mostly I think this relates to the fact that I DO want to asborb the information contained within all the emails. There is no doubt that email multiplies my productivity by a huge amount, it's just that now I am starting to feel the downside in that I have a hard time responding quickly (due to the backlog)/fail to respond to important items (if I only rush to kill the most recent ones)

Anyway, hoping that a week off will provide me with time to meditate on the issue, and while I am at it, start a lively thread here on current.com:

HERE IS THE CONTEST:
Guess how many unread emails will be waiting for me in my Inbox on Monday, September 10th. Closest guest will receive one box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts. IT admins who can cheat are not eligible.

Here are some facts to help you in your guess:

* Over the past 5 workdays, I have received 263, 286, 202, 261, and 217 emails.
* I tend to get 10 or so emails on weekends
* I will not be checking mail from 6 PM this Friday through 9 AM on the 10th
* Remember that post has a night shift, so I get a fair # of emails after business hours

Please post your guess (and your thoughts on the information onslaught delivered to your inbox) as a comment to this item.

We're all forgetting a fun little thing called Burning Man...that should bring the email count up to about 388! What's even more exciting, is that with all the cheeky responses above, I, the ONLY PERSON with a real guess is sure to win :)

In addition to being a a spectacular year, I think your e-mail intake actually increased from your daily avg thanks to the fantastic work done by the TV Free team. Have a great vacation! (and can I substitute Bad Ass Coffee for chocolates after I win?)

Responses to the above in order below. Thanks for playing!!

    1. Bold first move.
    2. No.
    3. Third place
    4. Fourth place
    5. Second place
    6. The chocolate has neither worms nor female sheep in it
    7. WINNER! Closest to the actual count of 972! I'll send them down in the LA pouch.
    8. Good guess
    9. Bad guess
    10. Thanks, I did. No fedex this time.
    11. Too deep a question to answer here.
    12. Also a bad guess, numerically. I recommend a cool book called Innumeracy all about how we can't conceive of large numbers with our puny brains. BTW, if I read one email per second per head without rest, and had four heads, and had started reading emails around when Caesar was stabbed, I'd still be at it for 30 more years if I had that many. Innumeracy!
    13. Admittedly, the number was lower than my own guess (1500), but not that low. I think one factor I did not consider was the fact that I send a fair amount of email to myself via our many alias lists.
    14. For those of you not familiar with Gematria, Stephen is making a coded guess of about 1,800 in his email of good wishes. Thanks, SB! Much chai to you and yours, as well!
    15. All of you are probably familiar with Satan
    16. Close, but not close enough
    17. Trying to own the space betweem 1149 and 1289? Very Price Is Right!
    18. You probably guess that every time
    19. It was, it did not, you could, but you won't.

Thanks again, all. I had fun.

Hurray! I can't believe that worked, I came up with an exact average based on the previous stats you gave us, haha. Thanks!
