The Phenomenon of Branding as an influence on culture or as a culture creating mechanism brings ads into our cultural landscape. Brnading is not only an art, it is a study of the human mind that uses psychology, sociology, the histrionics of the individual, culture, demographics, statistics and more. Kalle Lasn of Adbusters discusses escaping the global construct of consumerism.

  • Nicely done. Good to see someone tackling this complex subject. Cultural based documentaries are tricky to present using video/film... but you seem to be balancing information, observation and compelling visuals quite well. 2/3 the way thru your project... the video is messed up. Sadly couldn't finish.

I thought you had some good breakup visual bits to move along the talking heads. This subject and the scope which you've chosen makes me feel like this should be longer then 15 minutes. I wish you luck getting more exposure...(props for getting the adbusters guy)

and if you have time... check out my first upload... <a href=" http://current.tv/watch/67660702.htm">link</...

  • Nicely put together. You got both sides of the story, which most people wouldn't do. It's clearly and nicely done. Good Job.
  • Thank you for something thought provoking and intellectual! Excellent Work!

  • interesting pod
  • the interludes with music and quotes seemed a little bit scattered, and not directly relevant to telling the story of the documentary. don't impress us with quotes from theorists, get people on film explaining how theory helps us understand brands.
  • Great job! I'm a big fan of Adbusters. I guess my only criticism is that the pod doesn't stress the individual agency involved in consumption. While it may seem that the world is filled with sheeplike consumers, could it be that some of these people are actually appropriating these symbols as they are consuming them, and making them their own? Is syncretic Catholicism as practiced in parts of the Caribbean and Brazil the same thing as Roman Catholicism? When Coca-Cola is used in indigenous religious ceremonies in Mexico, is it really the same Coca-Cola being consumed at a McDonald's in suburban America? These are examples of communities that consumed products and ideologies, but then turned around and fit them into their own systems, as bricoleurs. Something to think about... Green light!
  • was it my computer or did this video get messed up half way through?

    from what I did see...

GL. Excellent! THis is very interesting and worthy of many people seeing! I can't stop thinking about the branding of "American Government." This magic has worked VERY well on American culture.

This is a fantastic story and video. This needs to be on Current TV NOW!!!
