This is just a thin slice of life in the world of Sumo. This pod shows how the audience responds to whenever a yokozuna - sumo champion - is beaten by a lower-ranking wrestler. It's also a bit of current news in the Sumo world as the fight depicted here helped to ensure a new Yokozuna would be chosen.

fuzzy camera work but good noentheless
  • As always... very cool shots and some great photos also...

I wish they'd fix my score so you could get 25 instead of 10.

conference call on Tuesday... hope to hear from you..I'm going to try to make it.
  • An interesting angle on Sumo. A well put together piece, with well balanced strokes in the way of information, and just the right amount of attention to detail in the way of delicate cut aways. Well done!
  • Love it
  • you make my favorites Dave, cool work...gl
my father-in-law lives in Japan, they are crazy for the sumo there.

  • Good job on your piece... I would save the intro music credit for the end. Love it, Dave-son.

  • you shouldn't be afraid of putting graphics over moving video... as long as you can read it with good separation from the background.
    i enjoyed learning something new.
  • how do these guys get so fat eating sushi, i thought it was healthy?
  • Actually they eat alot of chanko-nambe which is a soup-like dish with everything and the kitchen sink thrown in it depending on who's cooking.
  • Keep it up!

  • Anytime Sumo is on ESPN5 I am hooked. Good insight. I wish the piece was extended so see more about the life of a Sumo wrestler. Make another with more behind the scenes and you get a thumbs up.

    peace

  • Thanks for the comments!

Afton and topler, this is only one small slice of life on sumo - not an expose on the entire sport. This pod is mainly about what the audience does when a champion loses along with some background info and current sports news. What you are asking for is a different pod entirely.

As for your request, rather impossible as sumo is rather tight-lipped and they're not about to grant me the right to interview a wrestler or follow them around much less the champion. Plus those guys are really, really busy training and performing.

I plan to do other pods on various aspects of sumo. since there are tons of books out there on sumo as a whole, I plan to do short pods focusing on such subjects like the one above.

  • cool learning experience! GL!

check out my Toyota VCAM! i'd like to know what you think!
  • this would be better, perhaps, if it were narrated instead of subtitled.
  • what's wrong with promoting literacy, indigotima? Not everything has to be narrated like a formula, does it?
  • Interesting pod. I studied Japanese language and culture in college and loved learning about the Sumo. I'm greenlighting it.

I agree that there needs to be narration. Too many current tv pods opt for using text over narration. I think its a little lazy to just do fonts. How often do you see network television or even cable television use fonts instead of narration. Almost never. That's because that's not how people want to watch tv/video/film. Take the time to do a well-scripted narration and I bet you'll get more votes.
