Bowling for Kurdistan

Kurdistan is booming despite the madness that's consumed the rest of country, and alot of new businesses are popping up. I went to Iraq's first bowling alley in Slemaniya that just opened this summer. Bowling is a pretty un-Iraqi pastime but I figured it would be a great place to find Iraqi youth to talk to about the whole war thing.

  • Hala Bizack! Consistently coming with the topical, relevant, fun, heavy pieces from the Middle East. (I know you have Montreal on lock as well...)

    Amazing juxtaposition.

  • This is excellent. I want to see this on TV. I particularly love that it doesn't devolve into a puff piece upon arriving at the bowling alley. This is the kind of humanizing yet political piece Americans need to see. "Our" sport, but Their politics! It's a great metaphor for occupation.

And yeah I know we didn't invent bowling, but at least the ten-pin style, right?
  • Fanstastic report, we need more social lifestyle reports like these

  • Having bowling in the report made me more interested in the story. Good work!
  • Wow, powerful and entertaining, thank you.
Did you by any chance read today's (Sunday, September 2nd, 2007) OP ED piece by Thomas L. Friedman titled "The Kurdish Secret"? You might find it interesting. Thanks again, Cove.
  • Love this kind of piece.

  • It's nice to see what larger Iraq might look like -- normal -- if the sectarian problems can be brought under control. How could anyone prefer killing to bowling?

You could improve it by making the subtitles a little more readable. Also, you could digitally slow the dialog just a little to give time to read.

  • Interesting report. Comments from Iraqis in Kurdistan are an interesting counter point to mainstream media coverage of Iraq...
