It's OPEN, ya'll. This is a true landmark. And scary as hell. From Wikipedia, FYI:The Northwest Passage is a sea route through the Arctic Ocean along the northern coast of North America via the waterways amidst the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The various islands of the archipelago are separated from one another and the Canadian mainland by a series of Arctic waterways collectively known as the Northwest Passages or Northwestern Passages.Sought by explorers for centuries as a possible trade route, it was first navigated by Roald Amundsen in 1903-6. In September 2007, the European Space Agency announced that the area covered by sea ice in the Arctic has shrunk to its lowest level since satellite measurements began nearly 30 years ago, making the Northwest Passage navigable. This and the contested sovereignty claims over the waters may complicate future shipping through the region: the Canadian government considers the Northwestern Passages part of the Canadian Internal Waters, but various countries maintain they are an international strait or transit passage, allowing free and unencumbered passage

I heard about this on the radio on my drive across country. It makes me feel sick to my stomach. :(
    A few thoughts.
    1. Even if everyone, from governments on down to every average citizen, got with it, took all of Al's advice and did every last thing we could to address global warming...I don't think there's any way that this re-freezes. I think it'd take another ice age.
    2. While it will provide trade advantages, and is essentially a short cut, therefore shortening the length of trips (a good thing from an environmental and economic perspective), this is the first time those waters and areas and the animals that live there will be directly exposed to the effects of shipping - the waves caused by the boats could increase ice break up, the pollution, the noise, etc. etc. I have no idea how bad this could be - maybe it's not a big deal, but maybe it is.
When are we going to wise up and start doing what it takes to address global warming?? It's not a joke!! :(
