  • The internet really does accent peoples' bad taste, doesn't it?

    ...Unfortunately.

  • If you watch my friends video about internet celebrities, you'll see that he thinks it's all about numbers.

Unfortunately, it is. Take Lisa Nova, for example. Failed her first audition for MadTV (how do you fail for something that bad?) only to get a recall because the producers discovered she had a bunch of subscribers who may or may not even be in a position to watch MadTV.

Numbers are all that matters any more. A novelist wont get published if he can't get the numbers. That means Gide would not succeed in today's world. A mainstream band will not be able to do what they want unless they get the numbers.

It really stops people from developing their talent and developing a reputation, because the emphasis is on a billion friends on MySpace, or a trillion views on YouTube. Compare bad sketch comedy made by amateurs with someone like, say, Peter Cook. The amateurs win hands down. Some people mistakingly think this makes the amateurs better.
