- Carbon offsetting (14)
Around the world, companies and individuals are getting involved in carbon offsetting projects. Carbon offsetting schemes are designed to invest in renewable energy to offset greenhouse gas emissions. In Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority is one of the agencies that has taken advantage of the carbon market through reforestation projects in national parks. Critics say the projects have forced people off their land, while the UWA says the eviction process was part of an effort to secure the national park prior to the offsetting project. Jonathan Jones and Anna Sussman are in Uganda as part of their trip around the world. They bring you this report.

Definitely informative. I like some of the rough footage because it changes the pace a bit.

I have mixed feelings about greenlighting this. I'm afraid people will see it and then not do carbon offsetting. I think that when people buy carbon credits it causes them to think more about what they use and use less. I imagine it works the way that dieting does, or a budget does, if you write down what you eat/spend you eat/spend less. I also think the money tends to go toward useful things. But it's important to consider carefully which company you're buying from and examine their pracitices. As the industry grows maybe we'll have standards we can set in place.
