The protests in Myanmar started about a month ago after the military government instituted drastic increases in the price of gas. At one of the protests, soldiers fired over the heads of a group of monks who were participating. Myanmar is devoutly Buddhist, so the action against the monks changed the focus of the protests to be against the government in general, although the monks were careful to keep the tone of events peaceful and religious rather than political. The demonstrations today were the biggest the country has seen in almost 20 years - since the military killed tons of people in a crackdown in 1988 (some say hundreds were killed, other reports indicate it could have been thousands). So far, there has not been a violent response from the government, but that is always a possibility.

Monks marching in the rain. Gosh.

This whole thing is fascinating & exciting -- change like this often comes when you least expect it, & when the entire world is looking the other way.

Any ideas what one could do to a) stay plugged in to this, and b) even do something to support the democracy movement?

What I was amazed about reading this:
    1) how did they get the pictures out of there?
    2) why werent these monks gunned down anyway?
    3) Is this like Tianaman Square without the masacre?(or do we not know what happened next yet?)
