The lost coast is amazing. Out of the way, but very nice. The road that loops you out there, continues on to Arcada

The Avenue of the Giants is about the most spiritual place I've ever experienced.
Frank Lloyd Wright built a Unitarian church in Madison, WI that features a low-hanging roof edge over the entryway. (Paraphrasing here:) He said that he wanted people to subconsciously bow their heads as they entered, so that their bodies would take on the muscle memory of worship.
That's a bit how I feel when I walk in the redwood forests: humbled by my smallness in this world.-

I just spent a week up there and my favorite place was Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park in Del Norte County. There are a bunch of old growth redwood groves (great for taking photos) and the Smith river has excellent swimming spots. Even when it was foggy on the coast it was nice and sunny in the park.

Nice camp siteIf you don't already have a place to camp, I recommend A.W. Way County Park. It's really pretty, and right along the Mattole River.

If you make it to Arcada, I'd suggest trucking a bit further north to the village of Trinidad. It's a beautiful little town tucked in between the redwood trees and the Pacific Ocean. Some nice looking surf spots between the cliffs (OK, I don't surf, but I know enough to spot a good set coming in), the freshest seafood you could ever want, and an amazing vibe.
