Like many people in his home town of San Juan del Estado, in Oaxaca, 40-year-old Rufino Chavez is in the middle of the worm harvesting season. He picks red worms off the roots of the agave plants and samples this year's crop. Picking the worms, which don't provide much income, is a way for Chavez to maintain a family tradition. They are also a popular local delicacy among the poor indigenous communities.

Interesting, but what's the point? How is worm harvesting relevant to these peasants' situation? And how does this relate to me?

What is up with the worm in mezcal anyways? The wiki says it actually changes the taste of the agave in the fermentation process. But it's not that old of a tradition! The practice of making mezcal con gusano (and it's only mezcal that has worms, not tequila) has only been around since the 1940s.
