Affirmative Action on College Campuses

Students want diverse campuses. Staff want diverse campuses. Why are the laws making it difficult to turn this into a reality?

    • This article is excellent. At its best, affirmative action is a policy to correct the effects of discrimination on certain groups. But, as this article so clearly argues, the effects of socioeconomic discrimination have been largely ignored by university admissions policies. Most universities tend to focus on affirmative action with regard to race and sex, not social class. California, on the other hand, has developed a more evolved understanding of affirmative action:

      "Despite all the political heat that still surrounds the issue in California, its universities seem to be pointing to a better version of affirmative action — one that uses a little less race and a lot more class."

    • Brendon Ayanbadejo (NFL, Chicago Bears -- UCLA 99') and Baron Davis (NBA, Golden States Warriors have been working UCLA 98-99') to promote the adequate representation of California's diverse population at one of the state's premier universities - UCLA. This public awareness program is led by UCLA alumni who are current and former athletes.The immediate goal is to increase the number of enrolled African-American and other underrepresented students at UCLA for 2007.The long term goal is to successfully create a long-lasting educational initiative that will prepare young people from underrepresented communities from around the country for higher education.
