Hey Christof, I think this is a great idea for a pod. Kids were eating adderall like crazy when I was in school. I think it'd be interesting to include the doctors that shuck it like candy, and what their incentives are.
-
Ever wonder why celebrities are so thin? I have heard that they use adderall as an appetite suppressant.
-
This is the story we didn't get with the last pod on Adderol. its going tobe tough finding someone who will talk about this on camera but if you can do it, it would be a legendary pod.

Blue powder is SO the new white powder...
but really, it was rampant on my campus and was so easy to get a prescription for it, kids were duping their doctors into giving it to them and their parents into paying for it--I think this piece could go into how often harmful prescription drugs that are making pharmaceutical companies rich are acceptable but other drugs [marijuana etc] are helpful yet mostly illegal

Study drugs are HUGE at Harvard-- kids fake ADD to get them. Check out this article in the campus paper. Students were afraid that the coverage would make it harder to get diagnosed, but as it turned out-- it didn't.
-
Just another Crimson article on the same subject.
-
Well, I have more to say about this drug, but for starters, I wanted to bring up this movie, which is a fictional account of a high school student who excels in school both socially and academically after he begins taking ADD meds. At one point in the movie, a jealous classmate, who happens to be aware of his (dark?) secret, humiliates him and proposes that he is a speed addict. Which, is accurate, actually... more on this one later. Thank you Christof for bringing this to the table.
-
Would love to see this pod! I think the adderall use/abuse stretches to people in their twenties, not just college students.

I'd be curious to know whether students who depended on Adderall in school needed it as they transitioned into their first job after graduation.
And students who really do need it--how do they feel about the reputation the drug is getting? -
After drinking about a gabillion cups of coffee today trying to focus for this website release, I'm not inherently convinced that our culture's caffeine addition is any better. I knew very little about Adderall -- is it just the temptation for addiction and ease of abuse that is so damaging, or is it the medication itself?
-
Would love to watch this.
And, from everything I hear in scare-quotes media, ADD prescription meds are the way to go, especially among students and housewives (see also season one narrative arc pertaining to Felicity Huffman).
Re: Aaaaaaah, good work on pulling out Thumbsucker. The middle part of that movie is an incredible rumination on the overmedication of today's youth (especially in the very competitive, tedious world of high school Lincoln-Douglas Debate tournaments!). The trend toward commonplace prescription drug abuse is hardly surprising. After all, doctors are overzealously doling pills to anyone hoping to "cure" an ill or flaw, no matter whether real or perceived. Is it any wonder that people are now trying to "cure themselves," even recreationally?
Anyway, I know this is serious business, but the image up top: Is that a T-shirt? And... where can I buy it?
-
If you are going to do a pod on ADD meds, you might mention the people who really do need the meds and the difficulties they are having because of the abuse of them.
My boyfriend has ADD, and I know its a pain for us. Once a month we (I have to drive because of his ADD) have to go all the way to his doctor to pick up a "new" prescription (usually a 5 - 45 minute wait) , because they won't allow refills on the presciptions. If I pick it up, I have to get a note from the doctor saying its ok for me to just have the little piece of paper, forget the actual meds. For the meds, I think I need a note from the doctor, the pharmacist, and my boyfriend saying that its ok for me to have them on my person so I won't get arrested. We put up with it because basically we don't have a choice.

I used to take Adderall. I was up to 40mg a day... I never lost weight on it and I never felt like I was addicted... It made me too bitchy to ever be addicted to it. I can still get it, but choose to struggle with my ADD. I don't want heart issues. I can only study when its completely quiet. The scatter brain is actually kind of fun, but I have to write stuff down before the thoughts leave me. Working out helps A LOT! I don't know why, but it does... still don't get myself to do it often. I have a back up Adderall bottle for those days I can't think at all.

I usually have my "guy" get me some when he visits a campus. Major university's are the hot spot if no one you know sells their script. Their is many a college he can pick from all around our central state capitol. I just take it for fun, but used to take it for the great drive while doing a major art project or all night paper. It didn't hinder my creativity like the non stimulant adhd scripts did. I felt more numb on the other kinds.

i was just hanging out with my friends from boulder, they go to csu and they just couldnt stop talking about adderall. these kids do drugs every weekend and act like its no big deal, they dont even think smoking herion is a bad idea... i think these smart people have to much fun parting and when it comes to studing they cant. so they take the adderall so that there messed up brains can focus long enough and pass there test. after hearing things like this i got inspired to make a pod, lol but i guess your light bulb went off first.

I don't have ADD but I don't think i ever would have passed my summer school classes if it weren't for the thirty miligrams of adderall i would take before classes each day. It's was the most efficient way for me to wake up at eight in the morning and study algebra and biology for 5 hours at a time. I did have to force myself to eat, however after the summer was over i had no trouble stoping and havent used the stuff since. I noticed someone mentioned exercise helped them concentrate i agree.

ADD, ADHD, RLS, OCD etc
lets keep labeling and medicating everyone for everything.

Hey! This is a good idea for a pod. Its good that you are creating a story out of it by getting students on camera that have had an experience with the drug. (creating an element that the audience can relate to). good luck with production. I don't have any contacts to add but I will get in touch with you if anything comes up!

Theres something about the drug Adderall. It has empowered so many to accomplish so many things that would not have never accomplished on a deadline, and more. It's the most constructive drug on the market, and horrible for your joints.
This is a pretty good discussion for you guys to be bringing to light, and I wish the best with what comes from it.

hey christof, just wanted to stop and say awesome idea for a pod. i'd be really interested to see what you find on this topic, i am a 21 year old female from columbus ohio, over the years i (and most of my friends) have had our fair share of adderall, and it seems to be getting more popular among even younger kids. fortunatley i was able to kick my pill popping ways, even though some people i know weren't so lucky. i mean, i see the attraction, it does make you lose weight, it does give you crazy energy, and makes you feel great, but i can't help wondering how (over the years of partying with pills) i've forever altered my brain and body. sad really.
but hey, you live you learn, correct? good luck with your research look forward to seeing this pod sir.

I remember the first time i got a perscription for adderall, I was so shocked that a 17 year old in high school could be perscribed something like that. People told me I had ADHD, and that meant I got a perscription for speed, who was I to turn that down? One year later, I graduated highschool, my grades had plumeted, i was too skinny, and i had the bitchy skinny attitude to go with it. I hated my senior year of highschool, I lost my friends, and developed an addiction. I am now adamantly opposed to psycho active drugs, and why there are few cases where they might be neccessary, in general they are over prescribed, and they cover up bigger issues that people should be facing.
Depression rates are sky rocketing all over the world, there are many reasons why that is happening, but it's gonna take more than a prescription to fix the problems!sincerely,
David from Boulder, Colorado, -
I can desribe in detail a specific situation.\
Multiple dealers, even more buyers.
With all charecters being smart, motivated college students, and work world prospects. They all just felt the need to reach "more" and aderol, along with other inhibitants, has torn most of these people from there original plans-

Hey, I am a student that actually does have adhd and I had been diagnosed years ago and I have been on adderal it for a long time. One problem that has come from this is that it has made it harder for me to get my prescriptions because insurance companies are very regulatory of adderal. I take a high dose because I'm a bigger kid and also its what I'm prescribed. This has just made life much harder for those who actually have it prescribed and use it for what it is supposed to be used for.

I was diagnosed with ADHD sophomore year of highschool. I'm now a freshman in college. Right away i was prescriped adderall when i went to a psychologist. I wasn't sure if i liked the way it made me feel but it was apparent that it helped me greatly with my work. i soon stopped taking it on a daily basis and only used it as a study drug because who wants to be hopped up on that shit all day? I'm not even the same person when i'm on it. I do actually need adderall to concentrate but school isn't enjoyable at all if all you do is stare at the black board. Anyway i'm a naturally smart kid, its not the adderall. I ran out of adderall just before i had to take the SATs and still managed to score a 2050. I'm rambling now because i'm not on it. the point is it didn't take long before i found out other kids were selling it for five dollars for a 30mgXR pill. However, since i didn't have any overhead because my parents were paying for it i cut the market and sold them for 3 dollars a pill. Now that i'm in college i'm selling it more often than ever. Especially this week since it's finals week. I've probably made over fifty dollars in the last two days alone. I suppose i might be willing to go on camera about it
