In Development: Generation RxI'm currently working on a pod about Adderall use on college campuses. Over the last 10 years, Adderall has become the most commonly abused prescription drug among college students. It's usually obtained to use as a study aid. I want to tell this story from the users' point of view, those who occasionally pop pills to cram for finals, lose weight, as well as from those who snort it to party or pimp out their own prescriptions.Assignment:I'm looking for people willing to talk about their Adderall use on camera. You can remain anonymous. (We don?t want to get anyone in trouble here). I'm also looking for "dealers," students who sometimes sell their own prescriptions to supply pills to others. If you're interested in this story and think you can help, please send an email to me at Christof@current.tv. Everything will be kept strictly confidential! This is an important story and you can help tell it!

  • Hey Christof, I think this is a great idea for a pod. Kids were eating adderall like crazy when I was in school. I think it'd be interesting to include the doctors that shuck it like candy, and what their incentives are.

  • Ever wonder why celebrities are so thin? I have heard that they use adderall as an appetite suppressant.

  • This is the story we didn't get with the last pod on Adderol. its going tobe tough finding someone who will talk about this on camera but if you can do it, it would be a legendary pod.

  • Blue powder is SO the new white powder...

but really, it was rampant on my campus and was so easy to get a prescription for it, kids were duping their doctors into giving it to them and their parents into paying for it--I think this piece could go into how often harmful prescription drugs that are making pharmaceutical companies rich are acceptable but other drugs [marijuana etc] are helpful yet mostly illegal

  • Harvard on Speed
Study drugs are HUGE at Harvard-- kids fake ADD to get them. Check out this article in the campus paper. Students were afraid that the coverage would make it harder to get diagnosed, but as it turned out-- it didn't.

Well, I have more to say about this drug, but for starters, I wanted to bring up this movie, which is a fictional account of a high school student who excels in school both socially and academically after he begins taking ADD meds. At one point in the movie, a jealous classmate, who happens to be aware of his (dark?) secret, humiliates him and proposes that he is a speed addict. Which, is accurate, actually... more on this one later. Thank you Christof for bringing this to the table.

  • Would love to see this pod! I think the adderall use/abuse stretches to people in their twenties, not just college students.

  • I'd be curious to know whether students who depended on Adderall in school needed it as they transitioned into their first job after graduation.
And students who really do need it--how do they feel about the reputation the drug is getting?

  • After drinking about a gabillion cups of coffee today trying to focus for this website release, I'm not inherently convinced that our culture's caffeine addition is any better. I knew very little about Adderall -- is it just the temptation for addiction and ease of abuse that is so damaging, or is it the medication itself?

  • Would love to watch this.

And, from everything I hear in scare-quotes media, ADD prescription meds are the way to go, especially among students and housewives (see also season one narrative arc pertaining to Felicity Huffman).

Re: Aaaaaaah, good work on pulling out Thumbsucker. The middle part of that movie is an incredible rumination on the overmedication of today's youth (especially in the very competitive, tedious world of high school Lincoln-Douglas Debate tournaments!). The trend toward commonplace prescription drug abuse is hardly surprising. After all, doctors are overzealously doling pills to anyone hoping to "cure" an ill or flaw, no matter whether real or perceived. Is it any wonder that people are now trying to "cure themselves," even recreationally?

Anyway, I know this is serious business, but the image up top: Is that a T-shirt? And... where can I buy it?

  • If you are going to do a pod on ADD meds, you might mention the people who really do need the meds and the difficulties they are having because of the abuse of them.

My boyfriend has ADD, and I know its a pain for us. Once a month we (I have to drive because of his ADD) have to go all the way to his doctor to pick up a "new" prescription (usually a 5 - 45 minute wait) , because they won't allow refills on the presciptions. If I pick it up, I have to get a note from the doctor saying its ok for me to just have the little piece of paper, forget the actual meds. For the meds, I think I need a note from the doctor, the pharmacist, and my boyfriend saying that its ok for me to have them on my person so I won't get arrested. We put up with it because basically we don't have a choice.

  • I used to take Adderall. I was up to 40mg a day... I never lost weight on it and I never felt like I was addicted... It made me too bitchy to ever be addicted to it. I can still get it, but choose to struggle with my ADD. I don't want heart issues. I can only study when its completely quiet. The scatter brain is actually kind of fun, but I have to write stuff down before the thoughts leave me. Working out helps A LOT! I don't know why, but it does... still don't get myself to do it often. I have a back up Adderall bottle for those days I can't think at all.

  • I usually have my "guy" get me some when he visits a campus. Major university's are the hot spot if no one you know sells their script. Their is many a college he can pick from all around our central state capitol. I just take it for fun, but used to take it for the great drive while doing a major art project or all night paper. It didn't hinder my creativity like the non stimulant adhd scripts did. I felt more numb on the other kinds.

  • i was just hanging out with my friends from boulder, they go to csu and they just couldnt stop talking about adderall. these kids do drugs every weekend and act like its no big deal, they dont even think smoking herion is a bad idea... i think these smart people have to much fun parting and when it comes to studing they cant. so they take the adderall so that there messed up brains can focus long enough and pass there test. after hearing things like this i got inspired to make a pod, lol but i guess your light bulb went off first.

  • I don't have ADD but I don't think i ever would have passed my summer school classes if it weren't for the thirty miligrams of adderall i would take before classes each day. It's was the most efficient way for me to wake up at eight in the morning and study algebra and biology for 5 hours at a time. I did have to force myself to eat, however after the summer was over i had no trouble stoping and havent used the stuff since. I noticed someone mentioned exercise helped them concentrate i agree.

  • Hey! This is a good idea for a pod. Its good that you are creating a story out of it by getting students on camera that have had an experience with the drug. (creating an element that the audience can relate to). good luck with production. I don't have any contacts to add but I will get in touch with you if anything comes up!

  • Theres something about the drug Adderall. It has empowered so many to accomplish so many things that would not have never accomplished on a deadline, and more. It's the most constructive drug on the market, and horrible for your joints.

This is a pretty good discussion for you guys to be bringing to light, and I wish the best with what comes from it.

  • hey christof, just wanted to stop and say awesome idea for a pod. i'd be really interested to see what you find on this topic, i am a 21 year old female from columbus ohio, over the years i (and most of my friends) have had our fair share of adderall, and it seems to be getting more popular among even younger kids. fortunatley i was able to kick my pill popping ways, even though some people i know weren't so lucky. i mean, i see the attraction, it does make you lose weight, it does give you crazy energy, and makes you feel great, but i can't help wondering how (over the years of partying with pills) i've forever altered my brain and body. sad really.

but hey, you live you learn, correct? good luck with your research look forward to seeing this pod sir.

  • I remember the first time i got a perscription for adderall, I was so shocked that a 17 year old in high school could be perscribed something like that. People told me I had ADHD, and that meant I got a perscription for speed, who was I to turn that down? One year later, I graduated highschool, my grades had plumeted, i was too skinny, and i had the bitchy skinny attitude to go with it. I hated my senior year of highschool, I lost my friends, and developed an addiction. I am now adamantly opposed to psycho active drugs, and why there are few cases where they might be neccessary, in general they are over prescribed, and they cover up bigger issues that people should be facing.
Depression rates are sky rocketing all over the world, there are many reasons why that is happening, but it's gonna take more than a prescription to fix the problems!

    sincerely,
    David from Boulder, Colorado,

  • I can desribe in detail a specific situation.\
    Multiple dealers, even more buyers.
With all charecters being smart, motivated college students, and work world prospects. They all just felt the need to reach "more" and aderol, along with other inhibitants, has torn most of these people from there original plans

  • Hey, I am a student that actually does have adhd and I had been diagnosed years ago and I have been on adderal it for a long time. One problem that has come from this is that it has made it harder for me to get my prescriptions because insurance companies are very regulatory of adderal. I take a high dose because I'm a bigger kid and also its what I'm prescribed. This has just made life much harder for those who actually have it prescribed and use it for what it is supposed to be used for.

  • I was diagnosed with ADHD sophomore year of highschool. I'm now a freshman in college. Right away i was prescriped adderall when i went to a psychologist. I wasn't sure if i liked the way it made me feel but it was apparent that it helped me greatly with my work. i soon stopped taking it on a daily basis and only used it as a study drug because who wants to be hopped up on that shit all day? I'm not even the same person when i'm on it. I do actually need adderall to concentrate but school isn't enjoyable at all if all you do is stare at the black board. Anyway i'm a naturally smart kid, its not the adderall. I ran out of adderall just before i had to take the SATs and still managed to score a 2050. I'm rambling now because i'm not on it. the point is it didn't take long before i found out other kids were selling it for five dollars for a 30mgXR pill. However, since i didn't have any overhead because my parents were paying for it i cut the market and sold them for 3 dollars a pill. Now that i'm in college i'm selling it more often than ever. Especially this week since it's finals week. I've probably made over fifty dollars in the last two days alone. I suppose i might be willing to go on camera about it

  • Having searched the site for the proper answer on how to become involved in the creation of a pod citing my experience(s) with adderall, the point of this response is an attempt to gain the attention of a producer willing to assist me in the process. I'm a (fairly) recent college graduate residing in Boston, who firmly believes my last two years of schooling could not have, in any way, possibly been completed without the help of prescription drugs, which I confidently persuaded my doctor into over-prescribing me (particularly, adderall, which at it's height/state of holding health insurance peaked at a daily dose of 5 30mg tablets per day. As a counter-reaction to it's side-effects, I acquired and maintain a prescribed 3.0 mgs of xanax per day, as well). Though I am willing to dish out the full details of my experience, which regrettably has lead to what my friends and observers call a clear "addiction," I'll limit this post as strictly being a simple cry for pod creation/production assistance.

It should be known that I am an art school grad, yet, despite this fact, my resources/experience in film are extremely limited. If I am in fact given the opportunity to partake in sharing/educating the world with my own personal story, the standards I plan to set for myself/colleagues and the end-resulting pod are very high.

**I anticipate and extremely ENCOURAGE anyone interested in assisting me in this project to contact me asap, at which time I will willingly share my contact info., as I feel it is a matter better discussed vocally.**

I thank you for taking the time to read this and sincerely hope there is someone out there as eager to help me as I am eager to create a successful, educational, personal, and informative pod...

...and who knows?? ...it just may be the true therapy I need to help build the strength to end my dependancy and help others stop before they create their own.

  • I have been taking adderall for about 8 years off and on. I've stuck to 20mg a day (mostly so I don't run out before then end of the month) but occasionally I take more if I need to get something done, if I really need the boost because I'm really down, or for fun.
I got it by telling my doctor that I've always taken it and convinced him to prescribe me 40mg/day and I split it with my wife. She really feels she needs it too. She had depression and PTSD from severe childhood abuse. She feels that it gives her more emotional strength, lability and lessens her social fearfulness as well as other crippling emotional problems.
I have depression and have taken various medications for the past 10 years. Nothing has had very much effect really. I take Effexor XR, 150mg/day now and have been taking that for about 4 or 5 years. It just barely gets me by and raising the dose is no good because I get all stoned out and can't remember anything.
I have dysthymia so it doesn't respond much to antidepressants. Basically, my depression is not like the typical "sadness" so much, but more like "the air is just too heavy" - too heavy sometimes to do anything - make breakfast, brush my teeth, go to work, take care of things that need taking care of. Adderall is the only thing that works. It gives me the boost the 'get things done'; which for a depressed person is a major daily struggle. Even getting out of bed is a struggle. Adderall has helped me to be more successful in life no doubt and helps me to live at less of a deficite.
I've stopped taking it many times for anywhere from weeks to months with no ill effects or cravings.
Yes, I take too much sometimes. Like it's great when you need to clean the house. My god, you take enough and you'll be repainting the ceilings, it's great. I wonder what the effects will be if i take it like this long-term (sticking normally to 20mg/day and occasionally taking 40mg). Effexor actually worries me more. I've noticed scary memory problems with it.

It's sad, but I really can't see myself ever not needing Adderall. I've got a serious problem with the 'tuning' of my brain, I'm not normal, no question. Adderall helps me to work and live more like a normal person.

  • I was diagnossed with adhd in elementary school and have been taking it on and off for almost 15 years. I hated adderall in elementary school because I was never myself and i rarely ate, I lost weight and I was treated like a "special kid" by my parents and teachers at school. when I got into highschool I decided to stop taking adderall, i was never affected with my school work and I did really well off the drug. When i got into college i decided to start taking the drug again just to help me with the long study days I had for projects and to just stay awake during the day.

I have never seen adderall as an enjoyable drug that brings me pleasure and happiness, if anything i feel no emotion, and I'm just constantly going and going like a robot. so people that say they take it to go out must be taking some other drug with adderall becuase I tooke it every day for 10 years straight in elementary school and my teachers and parents thought I was a blank slate when I was on it. The first day that I took the drug again in college after never taking it in highschool, I sat down at a piano and played for 10 hours straight and didn't eat the whole day.

I've never been addicted to the drug, and I honeslty don't feel bad for people that are addicted and don't have a prescription. and I also don't understand how being on the drug is fun... after taking it for 15 years its never brought more pleasure or excitement into my life.

I have really close friends that take adderall all the time and ask me for it. I'm not a drug dealer or desperate for money so i never give them any. I don't really think its fair that they just take the drug even tho they don't have adhd and act like its all fun in games, when adhd and adderall have seriously affected my life. especially when I was younger.
