50 years ago today, the world changed...the Soviet Union launched Sputnik (Russian for "Co-Traveler").
Oddly they didn't think much of it. It wasn't until they saw the US going nuts did they realize this was a fantastic propaganda opportunity.
All Sputnik did was beep, and today, 50 years later, you can hear what it sounded like. Oddly enough, on the NASA website.
But it's today, Oct 4, 2007, only.
