Belief is admission of ignorance. One either knows, or one doesn't know. When one knows (from direct experience and empirical evidence), one doesn't need to believe. When one doesn't know, and one is weak or manipulable or filled with fear, one chooses the easy way out - belief. When one doesn't know and one is strong, balanced, and lucid, one admits that one doesn't know.
Prayer? Sure, for those who need that crutch - but prayer should be personal, private, and silent, and never imposed.

Brilliant Vierotchka! I agree that prayer is a crutch and religion is a comfort blanket, get over it people!

While I have my own issues with religion. In that if you truly believe in whatever is you or don't there should be leeway for doubt: it means you care about your God or non-God. That's not the case though, because you're either with them or against them.
Despite the best intentions of the founding fathers, American government will continue to be heavily influenced by fervent Christianity (Much like the Catholic Church in Mexico, less so over the past few years). You brought an important point-of-view into play, because people like me, in liberal Los Angeles, don't get to see conservatism at such extremes, well unless you hit up Orange County.
Prayer in school is akin to saying the pledge of allegiance to me, it's imposed and the kids get "points off" for refusing to do it. A+'s become C-'s and salvation becomes eternal damnation. However I'm also respectful of what others believe in, be it Jesus, Jebus or Superman.

Beautifully summed up: "Prayer should be personal, private, and silent, and never imposed."

I think that this girl has more of a problem with the Mormon Church than with the actual conflict being brought up here... The question is not if you believe in some of the ideas and beliefs of the mormon religion but more on can people truely say "in god we trust" or even more that that "one nation under god"... so next time try and answer the question and not complain about how much you hate utah and the mormons...
