October - most people think of Halloween but it's also the time of one of the most important turning points of British history.

The Battle of Hastings is one of the best known and yet least known historical event in the English-speaking world which along with the year 1066 is beaten mercilessly into the head of every school child through-out the English-speaking world and then some.

It's often taken for granted that everyone knows it but that's not generally the case in actuality when it comes to the details. What's strange is that there's no movies, no plays, or major novels of the event yet there's plenty of material for it. The Battle of Hastings as we were taught did change English history, culture, language but it also ushered in over a century of foreign occupation.

  • This is a bit of retro-news. Retro as in retrospective. History like news has too often be either oversimplified or blatantly altered to fit a certain agenda.

    1066 is one of those - "here are the facts, just accept it, and lets move on"

    A pro-Norman conspiracy to silence the nagging doubts that the entire British monarchy established by William is sham perhaps? That and a number of the upper class draw their roots from Norman occupiers.

    This video also serves another purpose other than to shed some light on the subject and that is to make history interesting. Too many academics bore the socks off of people with trifling and tedious details and ignore the human interest.

  • Hey! WTF! Who hit my pod with an uncommented Redlight within less than an hour of upload?

    I've seen this shit time and time again whether on my pod or others - some anonymous cowardly little shit redlights new pods practically out of the gates.

    I'm tired of it and I strongly ask Current to remove this redlight as I do not believe it is valid by any stretch of the imagination.

  • Without a narration, it had trouble keeping my interest. In this case, the visuals alone (because they're all really wide shots) don't hold the story. But this is great subject matter. Also, the Ronin thing was distracting.

  • The 1066 in my user name is no mere coincidence to my love for the battle of hastings and that period in history so needless to say I was quite excited to see the title of this pod.

    I had to vote 'Not ready' though I think you could take what you have and improve.

    I would suggest more background noise as a start. (Not to be confused with louder more prominent, but more of it.) If you could find someone to narrate it as well I think that would go a long way.

  • Has no one ever watched a foreign film with subtitles before? I didn´t narrate it because it made the pod less serious.

    As for background noise, do a search on Youtube for the Battle of Hastings and you will see some raw footage of the re-enactment, then come back and look at this footage and tell that I did NOT improve upon it.

    The background noise was plagued by stereo noise and sports-like commentary. There was no one way I could have put it in here.

    But thanks, your "constructive" criticism has inspired me to something about the problem of unrealistic expecttions and lack of understanding in a number of people´s criticism here.

    By the way what happened to our rankings? The new site is cool but they need to put the rankings back - I'm lost. My Andre's Shoes pod was number 10 now I don't know what I've seen and what's new - huge drag! What do you think?

  • Mulcahey, make your own video then. This one (wherever it is at the moment) isn't about that.

    DavidGeorge, beats me! It was working for a few days but I was out of the country when they switched the site around so I don't understand this new system at all.

    I don't know how to find new videos much less my own.
