Crude Awakening was a massive art installation at Burning Man 2007. It was composed of seven 30 foot tall figures in various forms of prayer. They stood beneath a 100 foot tall wooden oil derrick. In this thirty minute show you will see the derrick burn to the ground after a stunning fireworks display and explosion that created 2.4 gigawatts of raw power in a single minute.

  • This statement about the religious/cultural paradigm we now face in unparalleled. I am from Europe and have never been to Burning Man. If Crude Awakening is any indication about the quality of the art, I think it is time to make it to America. The statement Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito have made about the environment and our dire situation should stand as a wake up call to everyone. We need to get art installations of this quality around the world before it is too late, or is it already? Bravo!

  • Though I did not see this event (a friend sent me the link) I hope there is another chance to experience it someday in the future. The brilliance of this piece comes across clearly, even in the low res. video capture. We need more opportunities to experience installations like Das Mann, Cusolito and friends have created. I truly love the perfectly scripted dichotomy of an environmental message captured by a massive environmental "event." I hope the people who watch this get it. What seems like a simple and obvious message has so much nuance built in. This thing is MIND NUMBING. Are we ready to face ourselves? http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=crude+awakening&s=i... to will help you get a more complete grasp on the magnitude of this installation. Check out the photos of the eight different figures. Now that's art!

  • Fantastic, exhilarating interpretation of our current environmental crisis! Passion, beauty, anger, outrage... if we could encapsulate the momentum and discussion this piece inspired and point it at our world leaders I do believe our crisis would be resolved.

Thank you - to the artists - for their intense contribution!

  • Thanks for such a great video! Showing the magnitude of the build and how much has gone into this project is really nice so that it may inspire others to believe that they too can do anything they dream of.
Great work to those who created this documentary!
