Obviously, it has nothing to do with the battery; rather, it has to do with the rubbing. Something about how a hickey is just a bruise, a bunch of broken capillaries? I don't remember exactly the science of this, but rubbing at the capillaries somehow, uh, yeah.
And it should be clear that you shouldn't try this with like a AAA battery or whatever. I checked around the web and some people recommend using quarters, the ends of broomsticks, whatever. I always just rubbed at it, just like I remember the teen magazine told me to. The sooner you can get to the hickey, the better--once the bruise is completely formed, you can't fix it, so rub at it until as much blood comes to the surface of your skin as possible. Somehow (and I know it seems paradoxical), this takes the appearance of the bruise away.

Simpler still - tell people that you're born again, and that it is a birthmark!
