Lake Eola Ladle Fest

A very controversial topic on Orlando is feeding the homeless. What's the big deal? I'm not sure, but Orlando mayor, Buddy Dyer, thinks it's a big deal. More than a year ago there was an ordinance passed stating that no group can feed more than 25 homeless people at one time. On April 4th, Eric Montanez was arrested for feeding 30 people stew. His trial started yesterday. Orlando Food Not Bombs is holding the Lake Eola Ladle Fest, a three-day event in Lake Eola Park in the very spot where Eric was arrested by more than a dozen uniformed and undercover Orlando police for ladling out stew to the homeless. If you'd like to attend the festivities where there will be food and seminars for the homless please come to the park's picnic area, at the corner of Central and Osceola in downtown Orlando. Lake Eola Ladle Fest is from Oct. 8-10.

  • What a strange law. What's the justification for it coming from the mayor or city council? I assume they are trying to prevent homeless from congregating, since that "looks bad", but is that really how they want to prioritize two concerns: food for the homeless or how groups of homeless make the city look?

  • I've talked to George Crossley from the ACLU Orlando Chapter and he believes it's because of all the high priced condos that are being put up in the downtown Orlando area. He says the law is to intimidate homeless people and organizations like Food Not Bombs who try to help the homeless.

Orlando City Council has just passed a law where homeless people can not pan-handle. If they are caught they have to pay a $500 fine.

Unfortunately, Orlando has discriminated against the homeless for years. All the laws they are passing now is their solution to the "homelessness problem".

  • I think that's the most ironic thing I've seen in a long time--if they're caught pan-handling, they have to pay a $500 fine?? If they had $500 sitting around, would they be pan-handling in the first place? Ridiculous.
