  • Agreed - religious anything in public schools should not be tolerated. Separation of Church and State !!!

    if you want to be tought a specific religion, send your kid to a private religious school.

    Religions have been the focus of all the wars over the centuries. And WW III is due to happen precisely over this issue.

  • When there is more physical proof that a diety exists then E.T. then I'll think about religion in school, but until that time keep it out. If you think about the "Big 3" religions, Judiasm, Muslem, Christianity they're all derivatives of each other and all the squabbling between them amounts to nothing more than one claiming to be the chosen one aka better liked by "God".
    Maybe there should be an 11th Commandment : You can be moral and not be religious as well as you can be immoral and also be religious.

  • wcsjms--To make such a broad statement--"the squabbling between them amounts to nothing more than one claiming to be the chosen one" is a stretch. Of course there is much more than squabbling--there is bloodshed, but there are also great interfaith initiatives. I can think of Abraham Herschel and MLK Jr. walking the streets of the South together as only one example.

    Cody21--"religions have been the focus of all the wars over the centuries" is also a pretty broad statement. Although religious sentiment has certainly flamed the fires of war, it is often nationalism in the mask of religion that has been at the root of many wars.

  • wcsjms - I stand by my assertion. Take a peek back at history. The IRA bloodbath that took place for 30 years between the Irish Catholics & the Protestants. The current warring factions between Israel & the Palestians; and Iran threating to "blow the Jews off the face fo the Earth." The sectarian strife going on in IRAQ between the Shiites, the Kurds, etc... The damn Pope made noise a couple of months ago that the Catholic Faith is THE word of God and everyone should convert. Ann Coulture (sp?) just made a stupid statement (again) that Jews need to "convert to Christianiity" ... For christs sake, WW III is not going to break out over Oil -- it'll be over who's god is the right one. You can have faith in watever the hell you want to believe in. Just keep it out of the public schools and my bedroom ... !

  • Devof makes a good point when he states that no one should be looked down upon because of their religious beliefs or lack of. I attended Catholic schools all my life. Now this was back in the 50s and 60s but still -- I asked a question of the nun: If a Jewish person led an exemplary life, was a wonderful person, could they go to heaven when they died? The nun answered, "How can anyone get into heaven who doesn't believe in the Holy Trinity?"

    Even at my young age I knew this was wrong! Prayer in school caters to Christians, most notably the right wing ultraconservative Christians. The same people who are so devoted to saving an unborn fetus that they kill the doctor at the clinic. Good Christians like that.

    What about the rest of the country? Jews, Arabs, Mormons, etc. Don't they count?

    No prayer in school!
