Some salmonella to go with that pot pie?

Nearly 150 people in a dozen states are sick due to salmonella from fozen chicken and turkey pot pies. Both Banquet and generic brand pot pies are potentially contaminated - if you have any in your freezer, check for “P-9” printed on the side of the box as part of a code above the use-by date. Or, just chuck them all in the trash, if you want to be safe...

Con Agra, the parent company, says the pies are safe if cooked properly, but I don't know if I'd want to take that risk, would you?

  • frozen salmonella???
  • Salmonella needs sub-zero temps to knock it out. But it comes back to life anyway. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6935146.stm.

I have to agree with Banquet. People probably aren't cooking or effectively nuking their pot pies to an even 160 degree temp. I know microwaves can cook very unevenly, which is why I don't use one. (And, yes i like my steaks rare.)

  • Well something certainly isn't right. I can believe some of the consumers aren't cooking the pies properly but it really shouldn't be that easy to get salmonella from a frozen pot pie.
  • " Con Agra, the parent company, says the pies are safe if cooked properly, but I don't know if I'd want to take that risk, would you?"

Well, it is a scientific fact that salmonella cannot survive intense heat. This is why most people don't eat raw eggs. Should we bin all our eggs too?
  • The problem with the egg analogy is that *most* people do know about the risk of eating raw eggs. The same can't be said about frozen dinners and the inconsistancies of microwave cooking. Even if all of the salmonella cases are caused by improper cooking, this is a PR issue that Banquet needs to address if they don;t want to risk a significant drop in sales.
