The guns used in criminal activities are typically gotten illegally - what sense would it make to impose more strict gun control on everyday citizens, when criminals will still end up getting guns at the end of the day?
In situations like that, at the end of the day, only criminals and government have weapons, normal citizens have nothing, and when governments become criminal citizens no longer have any means of protection or regime change.
Furthermore, there are many states with responsible yet lax gun control laws that have much lower gun-related crime than other states. The nature of high American violence statistics is sociological, and won't be rectified by more law - but by a different societal perspective and recourse.-
