I remixed a film from the 1920's.....inspired by current's new website and delicious free music library....I hope this doesn't give anyone nightmares...

it helps to pause and allow this video to load for a while before viewing.

FYI: historians say that over a quarter of the original footage is now lost forever...when imported to America in1927, the entire thesis of the film was lost and distorted in editing....at the time, it was believed the message was too much for american audiences...

the version of the film currently available, demonizes the protagonist (Joh Fredersen) the man who runs Metropolis. in the original version, Federsen's character is the hero who throws a wrench into his own machine ...and lifts up the working class..

the US version plays out like a love story...only establishes villains or heroes....and totally botches the director's (Fritz Lang) original message.

yay 4 hollywood...bringing us spineless, diluted entertainment for over a century...woo hoo.

  • Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" is, in my opinion, among the greatest and most visionary films ever made.. The special effects are amazing, considering when it was made. What you've done with it is quite original! Where did you get that footage? It looks like the digitalized and enhanced footage that was recently made.

  • Hey, that's way cool, to answer with a video of yourself! I don't have a webcam, so I can't respond in kind. Mind you, I don't want a webcam either, for various reasons.

    I first saw the whole original film many, many years ago, and then they had it on video.google.com a couple of years ago, but it was removed. I wish I had downloaded it while it was possible to do so.

    Yes, you're right - that film was indeed about class war, the rebellion of the slave caste led by the son of the leader of the rich who lived on the surface. It had, to my mind, some parallels with the Russian Revolution - which touches me particularly deep in an ambiguous manner... but I won't go into that.

    Jed's Other Poem (Beautiful Ground)
    No way! The saddest robot ever was Jed the Humanoid, the alcoholic robot who offs himself, from the album "The Sophtware Slump," by Grandaddy.

    But after Jed commits hara-kiri, his creators discover a journal of the robot's poems he'd penned in life. One such poem is "Beautiful Ground," which is, of course, another track from the same Grandaddy album.

    At first, the video for "Beautiful Ground" was just a fanmade thing, but Grandaddy decided to make it the official video for the song. The rest of the story behind this video is explained by creator/programmer Stewart Smith:

    "Official music video for Grandaddy's song "Jed's Other Poem (Beautiful Ground)." Jeddy-3, a humanoid robot built from spare parts, is a recurring character in Grandaddy's 2000 album "The Sophtware Slump." According to Grandaddy, before Jed's system crashed he wrote poems. Poems for no one.

    "Programmed entirely in Applesoft BASIC on a vintage 1979 Apple ][+ with 48K of RAM -- a computer so old it has no hard drive, mouse up/down arrow keys, and only types in capitals. First open-source music video, code available on website. Cinematography by Jeff Bernier."
