"You are no longer Monks."

Monks who have been released from their captivity in Myanmar are relating tales of horrible conditions. The government claims that only 10 people were killed in the violent shut down of the protests and that all but about 100 monks have been released. The numbers of both are much more likely a lot higher, with potentially thousands of monks still in custody.

The monks are reportedly being packed into rooms so tightly they can not lie down. They are beaten when they move or refer to themselves as monks, being told they are just men with shaved heads. They can not leave to go to the bathroom, and are given one or 2 bottles of water per day to share among 50 men, and they have not been given any medical treatment. Some are said to have died from their injuries in the holding rooms.

    • sanmyint, perhaps you could find a way to have them speak here and to the current tv network.

When the powers that be, are held accountable for their complicity with regard to human rights violations, we may begin to see real positive change for those who suffer most.

    • My family is from Burma.. this sort of thing has been going on for a long time now.. ever since the military junta rose to power in the 80's..torture and oppression has always been the response to any sort of voice that spoke for freedom and democracy.. it is so sad and frustrating to see, but I am glad that more people are aware of the atrocities going on. The most thing now is keep the momentum going and continue to call for justice..

    • When enough people support human rights all over the world perhaps things will start to improve.

The united efforts offered by AI and others is key.

We need to all come together for the same common good regardless of where we might be.

It will take the efforts of everyone to make this vision come into focus. Economic issues and outcomes may have the most effective results in the short term. Holding the economic players accountable for their actions is vital.

    • We are so frickin sheltered...not that I mind. More proof that the government of Myanmar is underestimating the power of the internet/ international opinion - not that it's stopped these sorts of abuses.
