Current's Christof Putzel investigates a growing movement in Russia where neo-Nazi groups are brutally attacking immigrants and spreading their hate by posting violent videos online.

abolutely riveting and deeply disturbing piece. What a piece of journalism. It's this level of work that makes me proud to be part of Current.

I was actually surprised to see an article in the NYTimes about racial tensions that had come to a head in Switzerland shortly after watching this on television. It's distressing to think that, progressively, the post-industrial world as a whole is backsliding - and often hand-in-hand the use and assistance of technology.

I feel that you've gotten some inaccurate historical information, and for the general cause of promoting a deeper understanding of this, and many issues, I'd like to offer up facts about pre and post Soviet Russia.
During the Soviet times, Russians, and many in the Soviet bloc, were actually experiencing a remarkable prosperity (especially relative to the historical Russian condition). Nearly everyone was guaranteed a job, everyone was guaranteed a home, everyone was guaranteed food. Everything else might have been lacking, but those things could be relied upon - which to this day is a feat no other nation (or alliance of nations) has even come close to offering their citizens. It was the collapse of this support system that created the need for someone to blame - as have such cycles in all nations in all periods of history since perhaps the dawn of time. Americans did it, after Peal Harbor, when they rounded up Japanese immigrants (and their descendants) into concentration camps. And, to a lesser (less violent) extent, Americans are doing it now concerning the immigration 'issue'.
Religion or the lack thereof produce similar amounts of atrocity, violence, mistrust, corruption, and etcetera. It is simply human nature to look for easy solutions to difficult problems.-

They are sick, broke and angry individuals. Hate has no place in today's world, if hate can prevail Hitler would be with them today, but no he is not, nor is Saddam here, spread love, else you will end up where Hitler did, Saddam did. Go get jobs.

I traveled across Russia a couple years back. On my first morning in Saint Petersburg, I came across a neo-Nazi rally. What struck me was how little the passing people seemed to mind the hateful, violence-laced speech. There is something sick festering in Russia and I want to thank Christof for exposing these people to the world.
Courageous reporting.-

Disturbing indeed. This goes to show what most people forget: terrorism lives in many parts of the world, in many different forms. And is very alive! It's a scary prospect for our future : (

This made me feel sick.
More needs to be done about this.
Intolerance is one of the ugliest things.-

this is gross just watching them it gives me chills i still cant understand why people would think like this...NOTE they are not skinheads they are boneheads...
-
These Russian thugs are the best example of what happens when poor white trash unites. They are uneducated, under-achievers, and usually quite ugly. Rather than bettering themselves with higher education, they would rather blame anyone that doesn't look like them for the poor economic status. I recommend they collect these ugly thugs up and drop them in the middle of South Central. Let's see how tough they are, when confronted with poor black trash!!
-
Brilliant pod, one of the best I've seen, and incredibly courageous.

There's still plenty of evil in the world. I'd like to think that someday my children will be safe... but I just need to keep teaching them about things like this. We must never let our guard down.
Well done, Christof! -
I would love to hear the opinion of some young adults who live in Russia that have some knowledge on this.
It'd be great to hear their opinion. -
I know too well.........................how ruthless this animals can be.......
I have lived in the Eastern side of the curtain wall for a couple of years.......
Surprising to know that this guys are cowards...they always attack in groups...
Sometimes even three of them cannot attack one person because they are not confident...
But the worst thing is that this racist hooligans belong to well known parties and organizations, but the Russian government turns a blind eye to them...
Ultra nationalists hold rallies and the "good Russians" are too afraid to fight them. So they just stand by..
Feel sorry for any person who goes to Russia. The country is not conducive for foreigners... -
Basically what happens in Russia right now is a complete inability of local population to compete in any way. Russia has its own big widespread problem ,alcoholism that affects every aspect of their lives. Immigrants from Cental Asia and Kavkaz are not addicted to alcohol and much better workers in any industry. Russians cannot realize that they will never survive without immigrant labor force.Demographically, they'll be outnumbered with those of darker skin in near future...one more thing a russian skinhead is too morally and physically scared to hurt anyone by himself...
-
yes this is sick , LUKOIL is the largest oil company in
Russia every LUKOIL gas station in the USA is owned by
Russia and when we support LUKOIL we support their
oil company and their GOVERNMENT WHO NEED TO
STOP THIS MESS. Lukoil headquarter is located in
MOSCOW . USA GOVERNMENT needs to see this haterd. -
It's interesting to link this level of xenophobia with that of the current situation of the US. In what ways is it different? In what ways is this fear of immigrants similar? Individuals shouldn't base their morality of off laws, but rather, make sure that their laws are based of morality.
-
That's what happens to POOR WHITE TRASH when they are uneducated and feel sorry for themselves. They need to spread hatred and fear because they are losers and their pathetic lives will amount to absolutely nothing. The only decent aspect to Russia is they do have some beautiful women with no future either. The rest of the civilized world should import them because they can least benefit something to mankind. After that, we (U.S.) should nuke the hell out of Russia; we should have back in the 60's for heavens sake. Turn the whole country into a chernobyl and wipe the scum off the earth! Damn communists.

re: sneakers
I have to agree with what you are saying. I live in Slovakia, also a post-communist state, and I see neo-nazi at least on a weekly basis. They are always in groups.
A friend of mine (he's at least like 2m tall) was chased by a whole group of skinheads for having long hair and luckily lost them. A week later he saw one of the guys on the street and lifted him up by his shirt and the guy literally started crying and apologizing. I'm not saying all neo-nazis are like this but I think at lest 50% of them really might be.
re: Chromeless and hachik
You are absolutely right. Its similar to what happened my home country of Slovakia. Many people here lost a sense of security and turned to alcohol. Its unfortunate but true. I dont know how bad the situation really is in Russia but Slovakia is on a good road to fixing its problem, in a way.
thanks Christof for this video :) -
Well done!!! thanks for showing how Evil is very real and does exist in our world. It is very destructive and only creates WAR.

Unbelievable...and I think there is so much irony in such an event amongst the Russians. I can understand what Christof meant when he mentions that it was tough to do not because of how he was filming it and where rather because he had to presence them and face their thoughts without anything to object. This is really tough for those that know what's right and would actually wanna bring it to a halt. Amazing, and sad as well.
-
Cristof, you are very brave for filming this. From this, I've learned that although I may have come from a country where violence between people because of their races and religions are completely unacceptable, as a world, we aren't very far from being as tolerant as I thought, even in developing (or developed?) countries such as Russia. It makes me wonder if there are schools in Russia that do educate students in tolerance and how affective it really is.
