THAT'S RIGHT!!

Popular stance but I disagree whole heartedly, taxes shouldn't be a penalty for the successful. Personally I support the fair tax, replacing our current tax code with a national sales tax. By taxing us on what we spend rather than what we earn(with rebates up to the poverty level) we can make sure the rich pay for their share for their excess.

Why is this under the Iraq topic page?
-
The top 5% of earners in this country pay over 50% of the taxes... How is it that the "rich" don't pay more?
-
You stated you don't like how our taxes are being spent. Then the rest of your statement was about how they are collected: who pays what. In fact the rich do pay by far the most taxes, and with earned income tax credits, a family of 4 with a $30,000 income will actually receive a check from the government instead of paying taxes: direct wealth redistribution. I agree that most of us, me included, don't like how our taxes are spent. There is plenty of funding for worthwhile programs if the earmarks, special defense contracts, etc are cut out.

I agree with dennish. I think that we should carefully examine special interest groups and look for reducing unnecessary govt expenditure AKA the war and infact reduce taxes. Our tax structure is infact one of the most unfair systems in the world and we should definitely have lower corporate tax rates.

How our tax money is being spent has everything to do with Iraq! They are being sucked into the blackhole of quagmire that will impact us for generations. But the sliding scale for the wealthy is important --the percentage of taxes they pay--although 3% to the average guys 8% - just guessing here not sure what it is for real--means they still do pay in more than the lower income people. What I want to see stopped is the government subsidies to the oil firms for example. THAT is what gets me about the tax issues.

A country with large middle class shares the tax burden more fairly than a country with skewed distribution -- say 0.1% controlling 80% of wealth. The tax policy gets fairer as middle class increases in size and difference between rich and poor reduces.

I feel that our Union (United States of America) should collect the taxes for such things as Healthcare, Department of Education, or FEMA. It's really hard for my to stand on this because it seems that there are so many that disagree. I recently had a conversation with my Uncle, and when he was in school he told me that his teacher told her class that the Federal government will never teach our kids. I can understand that programs on the federal level provide the greater good of the nation which is totally constitutional, and that children in NY get the same education as a child in South Carolina. I just wish taxes were mearly local, and not moving toward more federally run programs. I think that it makes people feel flooded when their local government asks for more money locally to support local programs, which are the things that should matter most... our LOCAL communities.

I don't know where you got the statistic about the top five percent (probably Fox Network), but it's wrong.

I accidentally said that I supported this comment, but I really meant to say that I didn't.
I think that it's immoral to "force" someone to pay for the lifestyle of someone else. I'm not saying that helping is bad. I'm a helper! I volunteer often; and, I choose to do so. But if I were forced to volunteer and to help others, I would stop doing so.
It's a very human thing to seek ownership of your choices and decisions. Taxes, that you don't want to pay, take away the free will of a person. That's why I think it's immoral for the government to penalize someone for not contributing to taxes. I think that this is why many people avoid paying all of their taxes. Not because they're greedy individuals (some are), but because they feel like their free will to choose, how they can help, has been taken away. -
i agree with you the system only makes those who are rich more rich. our goverment is ruled by the rich and they over look all others who are not in their world crazy to think that we might to have another revalt and take this country back to where it is ment to be ...........e

The Top 1% of taxpayers pay 29% of all taxes.
The Top 5% of taxpayers pay 50% of all taxes.
In other words, the Top 1% Pay More Income Tax Than Bottom 90%
So much for that argument.
And what sort of a rash generalization is it to say that "poorer" people work longer hours? Obviously, you've never been in management. -
tell 'em straight loco

I dont want to come off as a jerk, but this guy is wrong. We have a progressive income tax in this country as it is. Each tier of income gets a significant percentage increase as the incomes rise. What we really need in this country is a flat tax.
-
Sorry bud, the rich DO pay more taxes than the poor, the only difference is it doesn't cripple their financial situation like is does for lower income people.
-
Flat tax rate.
-
yea i agree the rich and poor should pay the same

there are several relatively simple ways 2 improve the way the u.s. tax system works. 1st off we need 2 either make a real law that requires public 2 be citizens liable for paying taxes or clarify the fact that no such statute currently exists.
people talk about a flat tax [mostly] because they do not realize how difficult it is 2 survive on the non living wages that an incredibly large number of americans are forced 2 make due with...
perhaps it would be easier 2 implement & understand a proportional sliding tax which would charge based a specified percentage of an individual's income & adjust retroactively when incomes change.
& lastly, something that i've been saying since i was 13-ish is that if the u.s. government really cared 2 represent the feelings & intentions of its citizens the i.r.s. would allow individuals 2 decide how much of their tax money went 2 specific services...
there could even be minimums so everyone is forced 2 fund the department of defense, but hopefully it would result in less $$$ for war profiteering companies' research & development of weapons & more $$$ for the department of education, e.p.a., & s.e.c. so they can actually enforce the laws they're supposed to, instead of being so underfunded that taking kick backs from huge corporations with consumer exploitation on the brain become a thing of the past...
maybe then the government could offer real quality consumer protections & public services.-

Just because the rich have more income then others doesn't mean that they should pay higher taxes. In many cases, I don't want to say most, their income was hard earned. Why should they have to pay more because they went to graduate school and have a high paying job. For those who do not have a high income, I do understand that the money that is taken out of paychecks is needed. However, what makes it so right for the government to take more money out of the pockets of the rich? So the government can fund a war that no one really knows what we are fighting? Or is it so we can go to Mars when everyone knows that there is no oxygen on the planet so why is the government wasting our money for no reason. Taxes do need to be looked at and need to be redistributed such as more money put into education and social security. Not to be taken from those who have more income then others.
