Thank you Mr. President Gore. We must stop the War now. We will never change sectarian violence that has been in this region for as long as I can remember. Our troops are having a mental breakdown, because the "enemy" could be anyone. Child, mother, old man. We have to stop the killing. NOW!!!!!

Best strategy to end the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan: Demand your representative vote against any funding, except for withdrawal. No need to pass any bill through both houses. Simply refuse to pay for war.

I agree with your post about the Iraq war. Every one deserves to have life. I don’t think that killing others is alright in any way. I can see if an individual that is using self-defense and accidentally killing others. But not a war. This planet needs world peace before it comes to an end.

I agree Al Gore for once. On his post about the Iraq war. We need to get our soldiers out of there it’s a waste of American Lives. We are not even doing anything we say we are helping the Iraqi people. SCREW EM. Some there want our help and some don’t. they made their choices and I think its time we made ours. And that is to leave.

I disagree with your post about the iraq war. This war is simply for the common good because freedom isn’t free. This war has a purpose and clearly iraq had a lot to do with the iraq war. If this war was over oil then we would have left along time ago instead of trying to set up a stable government so that way they in iraq can live in some what of a democracy. I believe that this war is fully backed with reasons for goin to iraq cause what would be he point of just goin into a country without good reasons.

I agree with your post about bringing the troops home. I think that we need to bring all troops home, but also make the Iraqi people understand that we don’t play around if they want to take the innocent lives of our troops over there just because they don’t understand why we’re there in the first place. All in all it’s a big mess that cant and definitely wont be fixed in a short time. As the war continues on I sway from view to view. But in my conclusion I feel we need to start taking action or we will be in so much debt and come on is it really worth 4,000 American lives or 1,000,000 Iraqi lives just so our president can make a quick buck ?!?!?!? you tell me

I agree with your post about the Iraq war. I see that patriotism shows that there are a lot of caring and loving people in our country that show love for our country. I completely agree with your Issue, the longer our troops stay in Iraq the worse its going to make when we actually decide to withdraw them back onto U.S soil, all that’s happening in Iraq is were losing people on both sides, were only going to become a bigger target in the future

I agree with your post about the Iraq war. We should get our troops home from Iraq so we don’t have any more of our troops dieing for no cause. A good definition here would be that as Americans we have the right to live without the fear of injury or being killed by others. We believe everyone has the right to live (life).

I agree with your post about the Iraq war because I also feel us being there was a big mistake. Secondly I also feel we should withdraw just like al. Lastly I agree with al when he says we are just causing more problems for ourselves. One core democratic value that supports my opinion is life. A good definition here would be that as Americans we have the right to live without the fear of injury or being killed by others. We believe everyone has the right to live. I feel we are denying our troops that right.

I agree with your opinion on the war. To be honest, I usually see more benefit than drawback to war. However, in this case, there is little if anything beneficial to our presence in Iraq. There were plenty of other ways to deal with the situation, but they decided to go to war and here we are. :(
On an unrelated topic, I believe that if you did run for president again, not only would people vote for you to oppose the republicans, but also because of your views lately. By which, I mean that the things you had made decisions on before, turned out bad because the government decided to go the other way. Now, they can see that you were right on many more topics than those that were chosen in the past, making you look better than them to begin with.

I agree and disagree with Algore on the issue with the Iraq War. We should take most of our troops from Iraq but I also think we should leave a base there to keep an eye on them so we know what’s going on and also keep an eye on their civil war they have started so it doesn’t get way out of control. We still need to train their police so they know how to protect them but we need to do it at our base instead of in all the heat.

Our troops have fought hard enough and no matter what we do theres nothing that we do will make the terriost stop atttacking us Americans. Even if we do win they are still gonna keep attacking us , because we are not there to babysit them.I agree when you say the Iraq war is like a magnet, because the terriost keep testing us andit makes us want to fight back even more

President Gore...Thank you.
My heart sank when I watched the night we started "Shock and Awe" on Iraq. Watching the bombs explode did not "turn me on" like it turned on Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, etc. War is their pornagraphy, which I find gross.
The Military Industrial Complex, includes corportations that make weapons, bombs, planes, reconstruction, and more. These multi-million dollar companies are what promotes the continuation of war.
Bring our children home now, the insanity must stop. War should not be taken so lightly. Karma is going to be really really mad at us. All of us. - 1 year ago

Saidit,
Deuteronomy 20 contains the divine law for going to war. The United States did not use diplomacy first. This makes the war unjust. We are fighting it on our own without God. Have you ever heard "two wrongs don't make a right?" Well, it was wrong to go to war with Iraq. Nothing we can do now will fix that except pulling out and apologizing. Keeping the troops there to try to "win" the war will not "win" the war. - 1 year ago

Don't get me wrong, I do understand what you are saying. However, Our nation has never decided to withdraw prematurally. If we were to leave so soon, than all the work our troops have done would be in vein. Besides, I value the opinion of the troop who served in our Army who is against the war more so than the opinion of one of your liberal tree hugging fans who protests the war and does not even try to take another viewpoint into consideration!
Yes, Bush was incompetent in the way he managed this war. However, because of your incompetence and Clinton's incompetence (while under his desk w/ every skank in town), Bush was in a bad position to begin with!
Besides, you and Clinton did not do shit while in office. The both of you were more about playing politics as a popularity contest that you were for the livelihood of this nation. Your boss sold secrets to China for campaign money, traded our wepons with China for food, and cut the size of our military which drastically weakned our defense system. That's just like taking your own queen off the board in the middle of a chess game!
And you seemed to of approved of all this since it happened on your watch. I think you are a liar with an agenda you worker of Satan! How's that for "An Inconvinient Truth!" - 1 year ago

Your assumption is incorrect. After WWII was over (1945), the U.S. occupied Okinawa Japan until 1972. We still have a military base there to this day. The U.S. still has military presence & bases in Germany and Italy as well.
Do you have any idea how long it takes to mobilize an army? Leave all the equipment there for them to use? Seriously? Any equipment would be co-opted by warlords or fundamentalist clerics. Anarchy would rule.
The government must be able to stand on their own two feet before we leave. The results would be disatrous otherwise.

We can do what we did in WWII. Just leave all the equipment there for Iraq to use. If you've ever been in the military it's hurry up and wait. I guarantee the troops would be ready to go in a matter of minutes.
I always hear it's going to take 6 months to 2 years to do this.
You know, if Iran invaded the USA, and they landed in Kansas, I would be one of the first ones to strap on a bomb and kill as many of them as I could. - 1 year ago

Regardless of how we got into this quagmire, we must do what's in the best interest of the Iraqi people — ultimately these are our best interests as well. We must act with honor. We cannot leave them in worse shape than when Sadam Hussein was in power. We must take responsibility for our actions and clean up the mess we created.
I recently saw an excellent documentary — No End In Sight — that details all the mistakes that were made after the removal of Sadam — during the early occupation. Regardless of your opinion on why we got into the war, it's a shame that it had to turn out this way. For a brief period immediately after Sadam, before the insurgency, the Iraqi people were hopeful and optimistic about the new democracy we spoke of. But due to an extreme lack of foresight and planning by the Bush administration — it seems things have fallen apart beyond our control. Piss poor management & decision making in the rebuilding efforts. The decision makers disregarding (or not even asking for) the opinion of the Generals and the folks on the ground. What a squandered chance to really make something worthwhile out of this mess!
The sad thing is, you cannot get an accurate understanding of the situation there from our media. They spend more time reporting on Paris Hilton and Britney Spears than they do giving us any real information about things that really matter. I've been watching every documentary I can get my hands on about what's really going on in Iraq. I really feel for the people there. It's just not right. We cannot leave that country in the state it's in. We must take responsibility. To leave now would be an act of selfish cowardice. We must make it right.

if we pull out of iraq do u think that that will stop bombings i sure dont they will continue but in a diffrent location the u.s.

I am so tired of the Corporate welfare my government has been passing out. This war has shown me to what extend companies/politician are kissing each others asses! The Military Industry is no different. What ever regulation we still have in this part of Corporate Welfare is those who aren't cronnies/giving to the campaigns.
It is my belief that this military invasion of Iraq by our military/government was not just for oil interests, but to cause more caos in the middle east. Caos equals business for the Military. The Israel-Palastinian conflict just does bring in the dollars like it uses to, and the Saudie's Emerates (the royals) need their people to be distracted too.
It is all at the expence of human life and the hard working people who pay taxes that pay for this Corporate Welfare. - 2 years ago

Hi Al,
not being an american and being of the second postwar generation in Germany, my own experiance with war is rather limited. However, I still ask myself, wether it is actually possible to pull out of irak in a matter of say 2 years or so. The recomendation of a high General was as far as I recall to move into Irak with much larger troops than actually went there. The result is clearly visible. How is it now possible to pull out without creating a real vaccuum for all sorts of activities of the bad sort. Is there actually a plan apart from the media cover saying that they have to be withdrawn or vice versa to stay longer?

very interesting pov but if you take the troops out of iraq "as soon as possible" then all the lives and people who have been sacrificed for the little if any change that has occured over there will be for nothing and it was basically just killing people for no reason. Now for the people who say that we arent even over there for the right reasons then keep the troops over there just change the reasons, make what troops are doing over there more efficient.
thanks for reading.

I have just finish his book attack on reason. One of the topics is, of course, the horrendous mistake made by Bush when he mislead the American people and the Congress to get a war authorized in Iraq. I truly believe that Al has to reconsider his stance that he will not run for election as a presidential candidate. We need someone with vision as well as experience to lead this country. We are all sick and tired of the sound bites offered by the lame excuses for candidate that we are offered for 2008.

As I am sure you aware, Mr. Gore, a recent CBS poll gives you 32 percent of the vote, within striking distance of Hillary Clinton's 37 percent. You are the only candidate that can beat Clinton with a genuinely progressive, anti-war and pro-environment agenda, and you are the best qualified person to run this country and the Democrat with the best chances of securing the presidency in 2008. We don't want mediocrity in our leaders. We want greatness. Please, for the welfare of the American people, cut a deal with Obama to serve as your V.P. and run for the presidency. i agree the best support our brave soldiers can receive is for us to bring them home. remember the conquering state always claims that the internal infrastructure will collapse in the void of their departure. maybe. but isnt it their right to decide their own future without a gun pointed at them to show them how superior democracy is? if we want to lead we must be worthy of being followed. we need to take away the executives power to wage war. that should be plain for all by now. just calling war a different name doesnt make it a different thing. and the power to make war leaves too big a profit to be ignored... hence our current fascist regime in the white house. change wont happen over night. despondency is counter-productive.grass roots is our future. share your ideas with everyone you know even if they laugh. a seed may be planted.another may water.

Thank you Mark, We can't afford to give up now. I'm afraid this is our last chance. We have to work harder than we have ever worked before. We have to make Republicans realize these Neo Cons are not Dwight Eisenhower's Republican party they are Fascists. Meaning Corporate/State over the people's interest. It is up to us because they own the media and people aren't going to get the truth from the news. They are allowing our jobs to be exported, and the country is over run with illegal aliens to finish off the unions and bring down wages. We have to make people understand that Hillary and Obama are both too right wing, and nothing will change for the better if we elect either one. We have to badger Al Gore into saving us.

Mr. Gore is entirely correct, and ironically this illustrates in all probability why he chooses not to run for elected office in 2008. America is the sole current super-power, as the charming phrase goes, and as such, it uses its unequaled power for both benign and evil purposes. We are as far away from democracy and freedom as we can be, yet we hypocritically profess to love the concepts enshrined in the Constitution. The truth is we are a warfare state, as Norman Soloman rightfully points out. In my opinion, we've become a fascist entity overall, even though there are Americans who still keep the faith of our forefathers. It's a shame we can't separate into two nations, because I don't believe we can ever reconcile the differences between the Americans who believe in true democracy and the Americans who believe in true dictatorship. The planet is headed toward either destruction by nucear weapons or destruction by global warming. I feel the world would probably be better off without humans anyway. Unfortunately, we seem determined to take the rest of the life forms on the planet with us.

Dear Al Gore, Please run in '08. In this time of fear, fear, fear, you are the one who has the voice to give me hope. I have been posting on numerous sites that I would like to see you re-elected and choose Chuck Hagel as your running mate. America is so divided and it the parties that are dividing us. They are all positioning for their parties and not us (Americans). America needs to Unite. I would like to see you run on an American Ticket, one both sides could support. Third Party sounds terrible after Ralph Nader, but you wouldn't be a third party for long, you would be the first party, our party. Think of the Good Democrats and Good Republicans you could bring to the table. I don't agree that all Republicans are bad. I have friends who are Republicans, I don't dislike them. I understand we are divided by parties. It's time for that to change. I can't think of another candidate that could unite us, like you could. I don't know how you feel about Chuck Hagel, but after watching him on Real Time with Bill Maher and googling him on youtube, I think your two voices could unite America and the World. There is no more important issue in America than stopping these neocons from striking Iran and working toward Peace in the Middle East. The War retoric makes money for the War Profiteers, but it is hurting America. I would vote and support you no matter who you would choose as a running mate. But, I think you are more of a Statesman than a politician. We need someone loyal to America, not a party. But, hey that's only my opinion. One Lonely Voice in Cleveland. Good luck in whatever you do. Your site makes me wish I had a video camera. Maybe I can ask Santa for one for Christmas. Depends, grand-children will get most of Santa's money. lol Now that your a grandpa, I'm sure you understand. Best wishes to you and your family.

Since planning for the probable bombing of the Iranian nuclear facilities by B-2 Spirits and F-22 Raptors, along with a possible invasion of Iran by U.S. troops depending on Iran's response to the bombing, is well underway; it is highly unlikely that either the present administration or a future one, whether that administration be Republican or Democrat, will wish to substantially reduce present troop strength in either Iraq or Afghanistan since both of those countries border Iran. If anything, troop strength there will grow.

I can see how your opinion seems correct for the world, but my own opinion is a bit more biased.
My obligation is to the citizens of the United States. Not to the wellbeing of Iraqis. Our military involvement in Iraq is not helping the US and therefore our presence should be removed immidiately, without obligation to anyone except our own troops. - 2 years ago

The difference is that if Bush actually said he will remove the troops "as quickly as possible", the reality is that he probably won't do anything differently than he was going to do anyway. The difference is that Bush has lost all credibility with most people and we don't believe him - and most of what he says is reactionary and only politically motivated. The difference is that Al Gore was against this war from the very beginning. The difference is that Al Gore has earned credibility - Al Gore we can trust. - 2 years ago

Al, I love and respect you but this war was doomed from the start. it is the illegitimate, dull-witted, half-a-brain child of the criminal who stole your presidency. This war, and its justification, are as bogus as he is! Too many people have died in service to Bush's fantasies of world domination. Our troops should be withdrawn immediately! like you, I served in Vietnam and that war was an inglorious chapter in American history. This one is worse! our troops are serving multiple tours and suffering deleteriously as a result. Troops have engaged in all sorts of nefarious crimes, the American folly has incurred untold billions of debt and contractors are stealing our nation blind. it's time to end this disgusting exercise in murder and dishonesty. It's also time to bring G. W. Bush up on charges for his crimes against humanity!

Saturday, 27 October, 2007, peace marcher, Vince Robbins, 51, of Mount Holly, N.J., said there needed to be more rallies and more outrage.
"Where's the outcry? Where's the horror that almost 4,000 Americans have died in a foreign country that we invaded?" Robbins said. "I'm almost as angry at the American people as I am the president. I think Americans have become apathetic and placid about the whole thing."

kashimb, Legally but not of the same mind set. I don't hate Bill Clinton. He has forgotten his roots. I just think he is very right wing. I don't like or trust Hillary. She tries to say nothing and get away with that. Too slick for my taste. I really like Kucinich, I just don't think he can win. He is homely and that shouldn't matter, but it does. There are alot of stupid people that vote. They haven't a clue about what is going on, or what a person stands for. They vote on looks, personality and if they would like to have a beer with them. I think Gore could win hands down if he chose to run. I also think he can repair the mess Bush has made. I just want to be absolutely sure we get an able candidate that is trustworthy. Good afternoon Mr Gore,
Many of us suspect that you are providing a cogent lesson in 21st century people-powered, internet-enabled politics.
We also notice that you are leading in many different polls apart from the fact that you have not announced your candidacy for President.
We also notice that one of the upsides of your strategy is that you are expending way fewer $$s than Billary and the others and, yet, you are always 'in the news' - because of what you are DOING.
The traditional media folk are all too aware that they are being "disintermediated" by US - the People.
Do be sure to register in time for Iowa and NH, however - or, simply, call for a write in in all primaries and watch what happens!!
In any event, looking forward to electing you as President come Nov 2008.
To the future - the one we are all going to build together,

"I'm afraid that if Hillary gets the job, it will be the death of any progresssive movement in this country, and could very well open the door to a Republican comeback in 2012."...................You won't have to wait for 2012 for a Republican. Hillary is one. Her husband finished off the fairness in broadcasting act, so 6 corporations control our "news" He signed into law GHW Bush's NAFTA so our jobs are being exported and Mexico's farmers can't earn a living because they can't compete with our corporate farms. He eliminated Welfare not admitting to himself that there are people unable to take care of themselves. Jesus said how we treat the least of us we do unto him. Looks to me like if Jesus were here he would be living under a bridge somewhere. Hillary won't commit to ending the war because she has no intention of ending the war. Hillary has mega millions for her campaign because she takes corporate money. Even Rupert Murdoch. Just because she has indoor plumbing doesn't make her a good candidate. I'd rather have someone with outdoor (a Man) plumbing and integrity. Look at the terrible job Nancy Pelosi is doing for example.

Aggressive war, such as the unprovoked US invasion of Iraq, is a violation of several treaties ratified by our Senate. Anybody who follows an illegal order is complicit, as are the Members of Congress who approved and funded the action. Ultimately, those of us who consume the oil they fight over will have to explain our complicity to our grandchildren. Meanwhile, the most unpopular administration in 50 years is setting its sights on a much larger war with Iran and Congress won't even consider impeachment. What are you gonna do about it?

Supposedly, we are in Iraq to stabilize and defuse a potentially troublesome area of the world with regard to attacks on foreign governments. S. Hussein and WMD surely cannot be the reason we are STILL there (after so many lives lost and roughly a trillion dollars that we did not have). If anything, just the OPPOSITE is occurring and giving our enemies an easy target to boot. We have been in Iraq longer than WWII. Vietnam was longer and so was (is) Korea. The point to be made here is that it is time we brought this conflict to a conclusion. Al Gore is correct, in my opinion and so many others, so why is it taking so long?

Dear Mr Gore:
I am an avid listener of NPR & heard approx two weeks ago from a certain member within the political loop of Washington, that there is fear that in order to keep Republican & current administration rating in a more positive light, there are tentative plans being discussed between the U S & for Israel for Israel to make a hit on Iran in much the same way that they very recently & hit Syria's site of nuclear supplies.( As you know the int'l media avoided this impressive bit of news). This would be accomplished in the hopes that Iran would then strike them back, as well as the US, & this would be the ticket necessary to to launch ourselves into this newest war, entering us effectively into WW III. This would establish Bush as a hero among his supporters & deflect the real perpetrators & architects of this newest war. Please comment on this if you would, please.
And please also note: we really do need you now to run again in light of this.

Hey Al ! (excuse me for being so presumptuous in calling a former Vice President by his first name). You gotta run man! I'm sorry to have to tell you this. It's a terrible job, but the next few years are critical to our efforts to change how we operate in this country, and the world. Unfortunately, all of the current Democratic candidates are only proposing half measures at best. That will not be enough, and you know it. I'm afaid that if Hillary gets the job, it will be the death of any progresssive movement in this country, and could very well open the door to a Republican comeback in 2012. The Horror! We need YOU! The whole world needs YOU! Please run for President. I, and millions like me, will work our asses off to get you in the White House. Okay...here we our...you and the American public having a "conversation", and it seems like not only do you listen but you explain things and guide people in the right direction. But here is one thing I'm confused on. The American public begs you to run and you turn around and say I dont think so. I respect that you have a higher priority in life than being president now and I'm not sure being president is the best thing for you - it would be so restricting. But I just feel so panicked about the choices out there. No one cares. They're all in it for them. I try to imagine the future with any one of the canditates now and I just picture things getting worse and worse for America and the world. We're in a tail spin and we need someone strong and wise to stop it. You can do that. However, if you feel you shouldn't be running, please, please, please why dont we start talking about that. Let's start talking about ways to get wise and strong leaders to want to be president again. How can we get those types of people to want a position that is so restrictive and...for lack of a better word...crappy? How do we get rid of these candidates that talk but say nothing and that just don't care? It's so hard to not be disillusioned with it all. How do we stay involved when it seems no matter what our input is it doesn't make a difference?

Step 1. : Impeach bush ! Do it Now ! There is ample evidence of lying to the public and misleading congress and abuse of power.
Step 2. Bring the troops home en masse now..We invaded without regard for the consequences so its too late to do anything about it.. The Iraqis can just use their oil to rebuild themselves and create their own form of government, , once they stop killing each other.. They can split the place in three areas and each have a separate nation, and what difference does it make to us ? None!! So get with it now !! - 2 years ago

I agree with Al Gore about getting out of Iraq asap. What I can't understand is how the so called facts can be so disputed. How can the same situation have such differing interpretations? So many experts, military and civilian alike, write books about how badly we are progressing in Iraq - about the squandering of blood and treasure - and still the Bush administration claims progress as they spread fear throughout the world. How can the good people of our country believe their claims? Why can't the congress curb the president's power? It all feels crazy to me, like a giant dysfunctional family who won't see the elephant in the room. We need an intervention. We need to come together in search of the real truth. Only the real truth has the power to disarm the Bush administration's terrifying weapons of mass deception.

I agree that we/the US must remove our armed forces from Iraq immediately. I alo believe that we must coordinate the troop withdrawal with the United Nations in an effort to ensure that the world sees and agrees with the way we go about withdrawing. Iraq was stable before the US invasion and will restabilize after we leave. Iraq may once again end up under the rule of a dictator/strong warlord type like Sadam. If that is to be, let it be. We/the US must become good citizens of the global community and focus on issues that are important to human kind. We must stop trying to control the world for the benefit of bank accounts whether they be personal or corporate.

The Power of the Presidency
Dear Sir:
You may never have been sworn in and there may still be people who do not acknowledge that the election was stolen from you, but the truth is that for the past six years, you have worn around the mantle of the Presidency. It should have been yours. And that has given you power.
You have used that power well. You have said things that matter. You have made a difference. But the truth is that when the next president is sworn in, you will no longer occupy quite the same place in our imaginations. The question of “what if...” will be less relevant. We will begin moving forward.
And where will Al Gore be then? You will, I believe, have less power and influence. People will want to be free of Bush—and all that reminds us of him.
If you want the power that is rightfully yours and you really want to change people's mind about the Climate Crisis, you need to take it now. The clock is ticking. YOu just will not, I do believe, command the same kind of attention in but a few months. A large part of the attention you are getting now is because we want you to run not just because of our anxieties about global warming. You have gotten us to care more about global warming because you should have been president, and you might still. The moment that option is off the table, you will be less relevant. Watch.
Maybe IÂ’m wrong. maybe you will be able to effect more change outside of POTUS, but I just donÂ’t think thatÂ’s whatÂ’s going to happen.

Why aren't these comments about the next war, the invasion of Iran, which would be even worse than the Iraq War?
Bush has already made clear his intention to leave the Iraq War to the next President, and Republicans in Congress have already made clear that his vetos will stand.
But will we also invade Iran, a much larger and more influential and powerful country, with the real ability to bring huge terrorism to the U.S.? This is a decision which will be made on Bush's watch, and Democrats in Congress haven't slammed it down.
Why isn't THIS the subject of our discussion?

I like Gore, and especially like that he appears to be the favorite without corporate media, or corporate money. A President that is chosen by the people instead of marketed to them is a new concept. I believe he would be the great President we are looking for and need. I believe with all my heart he could repair the damage Bush and Company has done to the world up to and including Iraq. I wouldn't blame him if he won't take the job. I just hope and pray he will. If he decides to run he needs to stay away and take no advice from the DLC. They gave him Liberman which is the only reason the election was close enough to steal. Don't choose Hillary for VP. She gets on people's nerves. Al, run the world supports you. Sir,
Americans want you to run and we can be sooo annoying at times, I know. But I doubt any of us will shut up anytime soon - you know how we can be.
The Blue States are yours already, the Purple States are yours too because they look back at what could have been if things had gone differently in 00, that and they feel bad - they feel you need your chance to pull us out of the Hell-hole we are currently in. The Red States (what there is left of them) are a toss up. Nothing you can do about the blind political rage they have.
I know another run for the Presidency may not seem like a fun thing to do right now and in a strange sort of way WINNING the election will totally suck. It will be on your shoulders to fix the multi-layer putrid mess we are in. You know what to do, global warming-wise, but it will also be up to you to fix our debacle in Iraq and what ever mess Bush starts in Iran. Oh and there is that open sore called Afghanistan we should put some compute cycles into.
And did you know the economy is a wreck? Remember that high-falutin' job I had under Clinton / Gore? It went extinct in 2001. The dollar also is lower than a Dick Cheney Dirty Trick™.
So I know you would rather not get sucked into the slime pit known as politics, but we need you.
Few men in American history have been called by a nation for the singular purpose of becoming President. Our founding fathers loved to hide out on their farms and wait for the worst of the hand-wringing to pass when it was their turn to sit and helm the nation that is America. Well, they didn't live in a world that included the Internet, blogs and mass email campaigns. So no matter how far out in the woods your farm may be, I am sure the Internet is available.
Few have been called and you should be warned we will keep dialing.

Oldnik007 HI, don't expect everyone to be on the same page, at the same time...please provide a link, thanks. So, what news will hit the fan, WWIII? Nukes on the loose, bio-terrorism, more scapegoats?... Lies, fear and hate?
I do, at times, refer to Al Gore as though he is a saint (an example). Despite all that has been done to discredit him he has become more polished and better able to make his vision a reality. The US/World acts as though we are in servitude to our abusers, which may be true if we don't make the necessary changes before WWIII and/or Martial Law. The War President 'W' believes he is doing the Will of God (a saint) as do many of the Christian Right, fundamentalist, terrorists, mass murderers and followers trying to make US/World in their image or make US slaves (like Planet of the Apes).
They enjoy when we argue over the insignificant differences they provide for US like scraps.
Al Gore is a leader with common sense. He represents
our natural rights as citizens of the world. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness. Independence.
Who has the respect of people and nations, ability and the visablility that Al Gore has? I don't agree that the Draft Gore movement has missed the point. Our country is bankrupt, pillaged and plundered for profit. Draft Gore or Draft War.

Those who want to 'draft' Al Gore are missing the point.
He is not a savior or a saint, as he will likely admit. You take everything too simplistically as usual. After my comment on this blog, I read lots of other comments and the overwhelming feeling that the USA bloggers are missing a very important fact. Whatever you want to do you never really think of the Iraqis. It led me to write an article which has been published on OPEDNEWS called Al Gore - my 2 cents, in which I repeated my comment on here and then went on to analyze the missing ingredient in American thinking, at least as I see it, and I do visit many US blogs and the NYT and WAPO. The later part of the article is what is missing from American thinking and is not only quite scary and devastating but is not reported much on the blogosphere yet. But when it does, the awful shit will hit the fan and there is very little that can be done about it. Talking about splitting Iraq into three and other 'solutions' to the Iraq problem will pale into insignificance when you follow the link in the article. By the way this information is being heavily kept out of the news, because when it does get out, it will cause every American to examine his/her conscience and the rich political class will be overthrown and hounded out of office - that's for sure. - 2 years ago

George Bush wants to stay until they sign over their oil, not to the US, but to the big oil companies. this is fascism plain and simple. The government fighting a big war to enrich big corporations.

Dear Mr. Vice President,
I'm writing one more response in the hope that you will see it.
I think you should know that I think you've got about a week to make a final decision on whether you're going to run. The primary deadlines are coming up, and your supporters know it. They're really starting to lose hope.
Whatever your decision is, I think it's important that you let people know pretty darned soon. If you're not going to run, you should go ahead and give that Sherman statement that you've talked about.
But I also want to reiterate that I think running is the right thing for you to do. I think you have a responsibility at this point- you already showed the courage to speak out. You already took this on, and you can't back out now. Moreover, I know that deep down you want to implement your vision. The people want you to, as well- they are waiting for a real leader. If you pass this up, I truly believe that you will regret it someday.
But, whatever you do...
All My Best, and Thank You. - 2 years ago

As an interested 'Brit' and interested in American politics (some articles in opednews) I think that there would be a political tsunami of support for your candidacy.
And why are you making videos about health care and 'bringing the troops home' if you are not going to run?
I realize that your plan (if there is one) to announce late and scoop up all the positive energy that the other candidates have wasted in their bickering and lame excuses for their voting records, but are you not leaving it a bit late?
congratulations on the Peace Prize - and you know that you would be unstoppable now don't you?

He won't owe them a dime. He got there with people like me sending him 25.00 a month. Hillary and Obama aren't near as choosey about where thier money comes from. Gore or Edwards are both winners.

Mr. Gore, what others see as fragments, you see as a whole. While an ordinary politician might think of Iraq, the environment, the economy, and human rights as separate issues, you understand they are part of one whole.
War in the Middle East is a direct consequence of our insatiable thirst for oil. Unless we switch to sustainable energy sources, we will be fighting endless resource wars until it runs dry.
In the absence of the oil incentive, the need for a massive American military machine to hold on to the oil will drop dramatically, and it will be possible to rein in the out-of-control military-industrial complex.
The need to reduce greenhouse gases and pollution and develop sustainable energy sources will spur an avalanche of technological and scientific innovations. This will provide an enormous boost to our economy, as well as revitalizing our scientific expertise.
The need for sustainability will force people to rethink their attitudes towards the environment. No longer can people afford to treat the Earth as an infinite resource that can bear unlimited exploitation. It will no longer make sense, either politically or economically, to do so. Some of this change of attitude will inevitably translate into a change of attitude towards how we view other people, as well. Without the psychological imperative to demonize those who have oil or coal we want to seize, it will be easier for us to come to a clearer understanding of one another.
It is all linked, and you are the only one who sees it all.
Mr. Gore, you said these words in 2000:
"Some have asked whether I have any regrets and I do have one regret: that I didn't get the chance to stay and fight for the American people over the next four years, especially for those who need burdens lifted and barriers removed, especially for those who feel their voices have not been heard. I heard you and I will not forget."
Hear us now. We, the people of America, are ready for true leadership after these disastrous six and a half years. You are the one person who has the knowledge of what must be done, and the courage and compassion to stand for what is right.
Please, Mr. Gore, for the sake of the people of America and of the world, please take one more step. Please make one final bid for the office that would allow you to lead our country in the quest to restore sanity and reason in a world maddened with hatred and greed.
We, the people, are with you.

i agree with everything you say, mr. gore, except for the way you allude that the government went into iraq for purposes of 9-11. the feds knew from the get-go that iraq had nothing to do with 9-11 and, i do believe that mr. clinton discussed matters of going into iraq. the only thing 9-11 did for the Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL)...ooops, i mean Freedom mission was to make it justifiable to the american people. you know, scare em enough to make them believe starting an unjust war is just. please...and, as far as i can tell, oil is certainly not the main reason we're in iraq. i credit the military-industrial complex (MIC) that one...and if the MIC gets passed to the right people, enjoy disney world, babylon, iraq...and super highways...and water, wastewater infrastructure, and airports, and you name it - all engineered by the biggest - prowhoeverisinoffice - companies in the nation. what a profit for those folks (and the ones they funnel money to).

Thousands of your supporters are pissed off with you right now - they are devastated. They have been out collecting signatures and donating to newspaper adds. School kids have busted open piggy banks for you in the hope that you will run and serve as the President that they truly want. Now they all believe you are not running – and that you told a Norwegian station before you told America!
Al, we are not rich people. We have been working our arses off for you. If you are not going to run put us out of our misery. At least have the balls to make your intentions crystal clear so that we may move on. You are now loosing your support base...regardless of how much you deserve it.

Dear Al,
First of all, my sincere congratulations on the Nobel Prize and the other well-deserved recognition you've received in the past year.
I really can't convey how strongly some of us feel about the need for you to run for President. You give us hope in a world that is severely hope-deprived. I understand why you wouldn't be interested in returning to politics, and I don't blame you one bit. But I'm so afraid that we're on track with this election to end up with just more of the same old policies of war and environmental destruction.
We need new, bold, fresh ideas and leadership. I'm sorry to burden you, but you are the only one who can bring it. Don't you see it? Please, this is our opportunity to really change things and set a new course. We will enthusiastically support you.
Just think about the opportunities ahead of us if we reach for it: energy independence, universal healthcare, policies of peace, rebuilding America's infrastructure, regaining our free press, reigning in monopolistic media... You are the one who has the passion and vision to do it.
We are behind you. Please lead us. Just do it. Break the rules and do it your way.

About a year ago, I began to question, How did I know invading Iraq was going to be a terrible mistake? From the beginning, while most were railing for war, I was opposed. Am I that smart? No. Did I have inside intelligence? Hardly, I'm just another schmoe like everyone else. So why was I so sure it was a mistake? I really did question how I knew. The answer was, I had been listening to other voices. Voices being ignored in a time of fear and anger. Voices of those I trusted to tell me the TRUTH, The Pope, President Carter, and Vice President Gore.

Al Gore is the one person that I would trust to lead this country out of the terrible situation in Iraq as well as the domestic problems we face here at home. There are huge issues that do require an intelligent and insightful person to address. I believe that Al Gore would have the sense to appoint people to his cabinet because they were the best qualified. Perhaps most importantly, I believe that Al Gore would be the only person to restore the presidency to the place of being a co-equal branch of our whole government. With Al Gore, we would not be in constant fear that our representative government was becoming a Dictatorship.

I know you understand how to read polls but speaking as one of your thousands of volunteers on the ground getting signatures this poll is NOT being headlined truthfully. First, statistically the poll is too small a sample to give an accurate snapshot. Only 183 Democrats polled with an 8 point spread, and you still come out ahead 5 points! I'll second smuray's sentiments. This is not the country I grew up in, and I'm just over a half-century old.
Vice President Gore, I believe you could talk directly to the Iraqis and ask them to stop killing each other so we can leave and they can develop the kind of government they want without our meddling. I believe you could find out for sure if Iran is seeking to develop a bomb or simply wants nuclear energy, which is what they said.
When you are sworn in as our next President, I would suggest that you hand over that humongous embassy we built to the Iraqis to use as a university. Then build a much smaller embassy, as would any country wishing to have relations with Iraq.
Thank you for opening this dialog. It would be nice if you replied to some of the comments, so that it is more of a back and forth, as it is on many blogs.

I agree. The troops need to come home but, as Gore said, we have a responsibility not to leave the Iraqis with a huge mess on their hands. What we need is the truth. We need to know what is going on over there and get honest assessments of how things are going. We also need to ask the Iraqis what we need to do to help them.
Until now we have just been dictating what would be done over there and, for the most part, we have told them when they would hold elections and who their leaders would be. The situation in Iraq has been excerbated by the financial motivations and the political whimsey of the Bush (mis)administration. They have had no incentive to make things right. BushCo and their cronies have more to gain (financially) as long as things are going badly then they would if they actually tried to fix things.
BTW, the question I've always wondered about is: how much is the Iraq fiasco contributing to CO2 levels? How much CO2 has been released because of this travesty?

Al, You are correct that we should withdraw from Iraq as quickly as we can.
So how can we do this in a responsible way ? This is something I have been thinking about for quite a while.
It seems to me that the only solution is firstly stopping all offensive military actions by American military personal. Secondly a meeting of all the regional players such as Iran and Syria to sit down with American counterparts and work out solutions for the whole region which has been effected by our unlawful attack of Iraq. By opening a dialog with all the regional players we could find solutions to quagmire we find our country in and open doors to other countries in the region which would foster a just ending of conflict through understanding and peaceful means. - 2 years ago

Thank You for the Video! As usual, you are 100% right again! I really believe that there is NO military solution in Iraq AT ALL, and our continued presence is only making things significantly worse! We need to get ALL American troops out of Iraq as quickly as possible (we can no longer help, as they now all hate us!), and then need to try to help the Iraqis by providing humanitarian aide ONLY - and we should also be doing A LOT more to help the ~2+ million Iraqi refugees, that were forced to leave their own country, thanks to us and this tragic, totally unnecessary war! It is now our moral responsibilty. The U.S. has lost ALL standing and credibility in the world, and all aide in Iraq needs to be turned over to UN/Nato control if anything, because a purely US led occupation is only increasing the # of new terrrorists, and the strong hatred of us, etc. YOU are BY FAR the best person who can help undo this terrible damage, and begin the long process of restoring the (fallen) image of America in the world! PLEASE RUN FOR PRESIDENT!!!!! I AM BEGGING YOU!!!! America, the world, and the planet need you!! Mr Gore, I agree with you on many counts, but not on this. In fact, I've found--somewhat, disappointingly--that the only plan by which I can abide is Senator Joe Biden's.
Sure, a couple years ago I might have agreed. It was never our fight to take on, and we were wrong to go there in the first place. But the US has caused so much damage to Iraq, I can't think of any other responsible action than to stay to repair it, to our ability's best. It's out of a sense of guilt, sadness, and responsibility, that I think we should plan a middle ground, one where we neither "stay the course" nor "retreat as quickly as possible."
Insisting that the Iraqi government select a single leader has created so much more trouble than it ought have, if only because we didn't fully understand the situation. Staging a withdrawal even as we allow regions to separate into "city-states," then allow each state's elected official into a larger parliament, seems to me a middle ground for those who insist on American-style democracy, for those who insist on withdrawal, and for those who worry about leaving Iraq an utter mess.
OK, OK, everybody. Before you freak out on me, take a look at Biden's article for the Washington Post. As far as I am concerned, it's the best possible option for leaving, but also refusing to leave Iraq in ruins.

Al, it is my feeling and the feeling of many people that Bush/Cheney are pursuing goals in Iraq that have nothing to do with furthering the security or the interests of the United States. They are using the U.S. military and U.S. budget to profit personally and consolidate power to themselves for the future. I believe they are essentially a criminal organization, and I know I am not alone in thinking that.
Our Democratic leaders have to a large extent bought into the conventional Iraq narrative -- the Iraqis aren't trying hard enough, etc., etc. I think this is absolute nonsense.
If we were invaded and occupied, had our infrastructure bombed to smithereens, lost hundreds of thousands of our compatriots, some of them our family members, if we saw a group of very greedy people setting out to steal our national resources while claiming they were liberating us, if some of our citizens who fought this egregious act were imprisoned and tortured, we would all, to a person, become insurgents.

I agree that we need to get our troops home as quickly as possible. Are you, is anyone in the public eye, willing to begin to talk about this illegal, immoral occupation of Iraq in terms of the cost to the Iraqi people?
If Greenspan can admit that the war was about oil and we know that the death toll for Iraqis is reasonably estimated to be 1.2 million (not to mention the millions of Iraqis who have fled the country or are internally displaced) -- then isn't it time we called a spade a spade?
The US invasion has caused tremendous devastation to a nation that was already on its knees after nearly a decade of U.N./U.S. economic sanctions begun by the Bush I administration and continued through the Clinton years. Economic sanctions, of course, followed the Gulf War and its terrible aftermath in which Hussein mowed down Iraqis who dared to rise up against him after having been encouraged to do so by agents of the U.S.
From The Guardian, 9/16/2007 -

Great site, Mr. President. I agree that we need to bring the troops home as soon as possible without creating more damage than we (i.e. the Bush administration) have already created. What I have not heard, however, is a detailed plan for doing so. May I suggest a major international conference including all the Middle Eastern countries (especially Iran, which it is really not a good idea to either designate a terrorist organization or bomb as per the suggestions of the two current frontrunners for president)? The best option will probably be to divide Iraq into autonomous, self-governing regions and get the various warring factions to agree to a set of terms for future peace. But I leave that to you once you get elected again -- and, in case you hadn't heard, most progressive Democrats hope you will jump into the fray soon.

Dear Mr. Gore,
I believe in you. I believe in your ability to flip the dynamic of the world in a positive direction. Indeed, to address the critical challenges threatening the lives and livelihoods of my three children and those of all others around the world.
Right now that does not exist in our current crop of political leaders.
Please run, Mr. Gore. If you do, my passion, money and work will be alongside you as we confront the colossal challenges in our path.

You got it, Mr. Vice President. All three of your postings are dead on, and the funny thing is that they are merely the product of common sense. But that just goes to show how badly your country needs you. With this kind of bold leadership- and perhaps alternative energy as the centerpiece issue- the people will respond.
Please help America, Mr. Vice President. This may be your last shot. The people will make it worth your while.

I completely agree. It is time to come home from this debacle. Our presence in Iraq has not solved anything, and just keeps enticing more violence against American troops there. We should encourage Iraq Nationalism, and let them take control of their own country, without American presence on the ground. Al, I really wish you would run for president. We need someone to be president who is qualified, not just ambitious.

Here's what I think, for what its' worth.
Rather than threaten the trade unions that were present in Iraq when we invaded, we should have encouraged them. Rather than importing huge amounts of unskilled labor into the country, where they became targets as well, for a number of different reasons, we should have encouraged Iraqis themselves to help us rebuild.
We must remove first all foreign laborers in Iraq. Iraqis should be allowed to form trade unions and labor unions. Without meaningful employment and labor base within their country, Iraq as a nation can never succeed. Whatever management we can offer towards achieving that goal should be removed as soon as practically possible, once Iraqis can show they can manage their own affairs commercially, and to establish a civil society that is sustainable.
Once this effort shows fruit, we can remove our military personnel to Kuwait and other areas nearby in the Gulf; and establish a quick reaction force to allow for international law enforcement types of action, if requested by the Iraqi government or under UN agreements.
The United States had no place then, and has no place now being an overseer of Iraq.
The 'mission creep' of nation building is turning Iraq into a quagmire of epic proportions. It is being used as a bully pulpit by elements of extremists to foster hatred towards _all_ foreigners, not just coalition forces, but towards foreign workers and aid groups.
It is untenable, and we must do everything we can to extricate ourselves, and other foreign nationals introduced into the region at the earliest opportunity.
Let Iraq be Iraq. Let the people of Iraq find their way. Let's get all the foreign elements, especially corporate interest out of Iraq, now.

This is a perfect response to a very bad situation. We need to establish a set of criteria to ensure, first of all, that our troops and citizens from coalition countries can be removed in a safe manner.
We have a responsibility to try to protect civil society within Iraq, but is ultimately the choice of the people of Iraq to set their own path to the future.
So far, they have relied upon us not only militarily, but for the establishment of commerce, the infrastructures of governance and the reputation of a credible national identity. While offering as much support as we can to ensure a stable Iraq, we cannot and should not continue to prop up a national government which is incapable of providing even the most basic necessities to it's own people.
It's sadly obvious the Bush Cheney government had no idea or concept of what to do once we were in the country. Back in 1994, Dick Cheney said that invading Iraq would be a mistake. I don't happened to him that made him forget his own words, or even worse what would have prevented the man from considering the consequences of making such a move, but it's the Bush Cheney administration had and still has no idea as to what to do in Iraq.

Do you now believe this will continue regardless of what we do? Has it not gotten past the point of reconciliation? I like the webcam style, refreshingly intimate, but
I wish Mr. Gore would be mindful that when he's making an important point, key words lose some of their punch when they are spoken with a shrug of his shoulders, and by looking down so that his eyes are hidden, and by tipping his head side ways. A strong word is stronger when spoken with direct eye contact.I love this guy, I want him in the race with all my heart, but I want him to be saavy enough to use body language to good effect. Al, your credibility on ascertaining the right approach to dealing with contentious and broadly difficult problems is the strongest advocate for your proposals. The right course is rarely the easiest, especially when having diverged from the proper trail a while back. Holding firm to doing what is right, and continued awareness of the challenges, is the best way forward. I trust you to communicate this to all of us, and I trust the better parts of ourselves to listen, and hold you up so that you may see further and with broader support... ok... yeah, I want you to be our next president. Thank you for your to-the-point videos.
I have one question for you, though. Other Democratic candidates talk similarly, but say we should leave a significant number of "residual forces." Do you foresee that as an unfortunate but necessary situation to put ourselves in? I feel that troops under a US banner really can have no more net positive effect on the area, and that only international peacekeeping forces should remain to keep the peace.

I wonder if the next administration, if the votes aren't stolen, lost, miscounted, or just hacked again could start some serious efforts to withdraw our military presence diplomatically, and at the same time start having diplomatic relations with the new Iraqi government.
Start peace talks and invite all of the Iraqi leaders to the table. ALL of them, whether we like them or not.
Offer infrastructure reparations to be paid to Iraqi companies with Iraqi workers to rebuild.
Offer funding to rebuild mosques that have been destroyed in this war.

Thanks for this... of course, you're right (and I sure wish you'd had the power to stop this fiasco from even beginning back in 2002, when you gave that great speech in San Francisco).
I have a question, though: what about that city-sized embassy that we've built in Iraq? I'm really concerned that its very presence is evidence of the U.S.'s intention to be a permanent occupier of the country, which of course feeds the rhetoric of anti-Western terrorist groups like Al Qaida. Shouldn't that be abandoned out of respect for Iraq's independence?
P.S. Please run for president in 2008. The Ship of State needs YOU at its helm!

Al Gore, your three videos are fantastic! You were correct that we should not invade Iraq back in December 2002. You have been correct all along. The sooner we get our troops out of Iraq, the sooner the contending groups will seriously discuss their differences, and the nearby nations, the Arab League, the UN, European Union and others will help the Iraqis to rebuild their nation.
Keep your videos coming and allow us to continue building the grass roots networks and organizations to assure that you are the winner of each state primary and caucus across the nation. The other Democratic candidates are good, but you understand the unethical and illegal actions that the Bush Cheney and Neo-Con forces and media will do to try and steal the 2008 election, just as they did 2000 and 2004.
You have the respect and support of the largest majority of Americans, and most of the world, and we will do all we can to make sure that you win the primaries, the November 2008 election and serve for 8 years in our White House.

This is not "as interesting" topic and itÂ’s not entertainment! It's abour blood and guts.
If you'd like to understand whatÂ’s really going on in America, listen to The Randi Rhodes Show on Air America Radio. You can stream it or get it on your local am radio station. She has soldiers in Iraq who listen to her show. When they call in we listen and cry. They know that they went to Iraq for OIL. They know about the lies and private contractors, and they are pissed because the Blackwater mercenaries make $100,00 a year while they and their families struggle. They are stressed. They did their jobs. The war was over when Saddam was overthrown and the occupation began.
Help the soldiers by joining the October 27th activities. See http://www.oct27th.org. ItÂ’s local and national. Be there and make a statement. Let Congress know that you want the troops home. Also, read the political blog http://www.dailykos.com if you want the opportunity to connect with the reality and truth about Iraq, about the 2008 presidential candidates, about congressional oversight hearings, and of course, we're blogging like crazy to get our BEST non-candidate to jump into the race!
If you love Al Gore and understand that he is the one candidate with everything, come to dailykos and join the brainstorming, the conversation and the bickering: "Yes, he has to run; his country needs him." The non-fighters but supporters say, "Why should he run? He has a Oscar, an Emmy and now he is the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Why would he jump in knowing that he would become the target of the right wing now more than ever? He doesn't have to run. He should enjoy his life." Then we have the people who say, "He has to run because he is the only person ion the planet who can SAVE the planet and restore democracy to America. He knows how to do it and he has the courage. When did Al Gore ever sit back and take the easy way?" Join us!

smorrisey, your list of "what would happen" has already occured in instances 1 and 3 and partially occured in instance 2. i also find it extremely arrogant for you to say that those 3, or a combination thereof are the only possible outcomes. and all US presence out in hours? i'm sorry but you do not seem to have an informed opinion of Iraq or military logistics at all.
my point is, all the negative consequences are consequences of the invasion. they are already happening, all the terrible scenarios people portray.
and nobody knows what will happen if we leave, except that we will mitigate the extensive damage happening in three areas,
1. unsustainable cost of the war (over $9B per month)
2. unsustainable cost on troops, casualty rates and otherwise
3. resentment from iraqis from the daily murders that have taken place since the invasion.

For years I have been wondering if and when the international community would intervene in some way to help Americans rescue our government from the illegal occupation by BushCo. The Nobel Peace Prize award is, I believe, a profound statement of how urgently that community desires your leadership.
Simply by entering the presidential race, Mr. Gore, you will transform an exchange of empty rhetoric into a demonstration of true democracy by posing real questions, demanding real answers, and reminding US citizens, and the US Congress, of the importance of the Constitution. ("If not now, when?") What a wake-up call!

I couldn't agree more. But, these current presidential candidates seem to be continuing the course, or changing it only enough to say it's different, but the end result is the same.......continuing our occupation of this country. Even the top tier Democratic candidates couldn't say they would have our troops out of Iraq by the end of the year 2013.
We need your leadership to get us on the correct path.

Mr Gore.
Thanks for Warning us in 2002 about the dangers of invading Iraq. Again you are ahead of the curve on policy. Please, please, please Run for President. We will fight for you. Hillary is not a leader she is a weather vane. She did not vote against Kyl-Lieberman. Sir Please you need to take the lead once again.

You're dead on Al. Please, I hate to beg, but there is no one running that has the passion that you do. I just rewatched your Constitution Society speech and it kills me that I may not have the opportunity to vote for you next year.
Please consider running Al.

Totally agreed. I always had the feeling, though, that we ought to at least try a tactic that I don't think we've tried in Iraq so far- a serious attempt at seeding an economic reform (that is not engineered for the sole purpose of profiting U.S. corporations).
At this point, our military presence (or lack of) doesn't do much good. You can't fight violent insurgence with troop presence any more than you can fight racism with bumper stickers. The underlying problem in Iraq has grown out of extreme poverty, fear, and flat-out horrible development of the financial and political infrastructure.
I think we can fight the developing problems there with education, business grants, scholarships, and a lot of patient, private coaching for the people that have to figure out how to maintain a stable and constructive environment after decades of brutal suppression. Imagine what Iraq would look like if the money for every column of armed Humvees was spent hiring better Iraqi police and funding little neigborhood shops. The price of a single Blackwater escort could probably pay for any number of business courses at a local scool in Baghdad. Ultimately, we're going to see the civil war- we already see it. We just ought to give them a few of the tools that actually work in suppressing desperate and violent uprisings, which grow in a culture of poverty, disenfranchisement, and addiction to military intervention as a means of solving problems.
I agree with you, Al. Let's bring them home.
