It is stupid indeed. But the point is -- it is criminal. That is why it should stop. Stupidity can be legal, but crime is never legal.

Sometimes the government needs to eavesdrop. If you are doing nothing wrong, you shouldn't care what the government that the government can hear you.
Really if you had the choice between nuclear disaster and minor invasion of privacy what would you choose?
