This pod by VC2 producer Jenn Dorn explores Breed-Specific legislation and gives a voice to those responsible dog owners and their pets who struggle against stereotyping, fear-mongering media, and ultimately the city and state governments who identify all Pit Bulls as dangerous and unfit for society.

  • Insurance companies are crazy
A friend of mine recently tried to apply for homeowner's insurance.

    She couldn't.

The woman she spoke to explained that most companies will not insure homes with pitbull or staffordshire terriers.

    Insane.

  • Thank you. Its beautiful to see other friends of pit bulls speak out on there behalf. I've had many pets over the years, some better than others. I can honestly say that my Pit bull "Petey" is hands down the best natured companion I've ever had. I rescued Petey from a trip to the shelter simply because a dog of another breed was too aggressive to share a home with another dog. their loss, my gain. Petey has been an absolute perfect fit in my life since day 1. He really makes it easy for me.

I could go on and on about his many virtues. Somebody once told me that dogs are like children that never grow up & thats how I handle him. I take full responsibility for his actions. He relies on me to safeguard him from potentially dangerous situation's like other less responsible dog "owners". This is why believe PEOPLE should be held liable for the actions of their pets. This country needs tougher penalties for people who mistreat or don't take responsibility for their pets. Breed specific legislation is discrimination & ignorance run a muck. I love my dog & couldn't fathom losing him for such a silly reason.

I should also mention that Petey & I share a home with another adult , 2 children-ages 5 & 7 and a cat. We ALL get along marvelously.

On behalf of Petey & the rest of my family-THANK YOU!

    Sincerely, Jaason Langley

  • Hysteria?! Pitbulls are dangerous, period!
Just yesterday two pitbulls mulled a women walking her dog for no reason in South Florida. Check out the clip:

Pitbulls are a figting breed. Nothing can't take that away from those dogs. Is in their genes. Usually something triggers that rage, wether on purpose or just happens naturally, is what pitbulls were bred to do.

Now, are there the pitbull exceptions, sure. But to me they are far and few in between. This pod for example. All the pitbulls are made to be angels, and probably are. But in this case with the pitbulls, the bad outweights the good.

  • I agree with pelones1976. My pit bull Chloe is the sweetest doggy every. She loves to cuddle. I have 14 nieces and nephews and Chloe plays better with them than any of there dogs do. I also agree that the owners should take blame for there actions. If a child gets in trouble it's always "where is mom and dad?". Pitbulls get a bad rap because people believe everything they see on tv. If a pitbull does something good they don't show that on tv, only the bad. Besides who determines what breed the dog is in these attacks? PItbulls, as with any dog breed requires alot of love.

  • uselessexpert seems to have a very uninviting personality. Quite the unlikable character. it definitely depends on how you raise your dog. i think its all the news and everything that happens with irresponsible dog owners that puts a fear into people. pitbulls are great dogs when raised with good attention. stop being dog bigots

  • Dogs aren't bad, OWNERS are bad...weather its intentional or not. There are just too many people out there who get Pitbulls BECAUSE they are known to be aggressive. They encourage and perpretrate the belief that these dogs are vicious. I know several pitbull owners who are great owners and the proof is in their dogs...some of the most loyal, obedient, well-adjusted dogs i've ever seen. It may be true that pitbulls are by nature one of the more aggressive breeds, but so are German Shepherds, but they are harolded as "police dogs" and are more likely to be nurtured and trained properly by their owners.

Also, how many other breeds are involved in dog attacks that are NEVER shown on the news just because they're NOT pitbulls. Personally, if I think about all the dog attacks I have heard about locally and through my own network of friends, I can recall about 7 or 8 stories right now and NONE of them involved pitbulls. Yet almost every attack i've seen on the news involves pitbulls. wassupwiththatbitches??

Anyways, what i'd really like to know is what the Dog Whisperer has to say about this.

  • Huh? I have an uninviting personality. Quite the unlikable character. So, how do you come up to that conclusion? Because I don't agree with your views?

    Boy, talk about close minded.

So Dfacing, if someone does not agree with your or the rest of the group they are univiting and unlikeable?

I guess, I'll keep being my uninvited self. Up yours!

Just what you would expect, eh?

  • In my personal experience, pitbulls have been nothing but totally loving, smart, playful, happy, eager to please, incredible dogs. What shocks me in this country, is that it is legal to have a gun, you don't pay higher home owners insurance for owning one, as a matter of fact, you are not even asked by insurance companies if you have one. Because the problem isn't the gun and it's capacity for harm. The problem is the person behind the gun.
Unfortuneately there are horrible people out there that have pitbulls for the wrong reasons. These people don't believe in nurturing the natural loving nature in these dogs, they focus all their energy in nurturing the aggressive natures of these dogs. And that is done through horrible abuse. When are we going to go after the people that are commiting crimes against these amazing creatures? Why are we further pursecuting innocent animals? They are worth the extra insurance money. They are worth being seen as a social deviant. They are worth whatever the bad rap they get. If the people that love these dogs and want to own these dogs, don't stick up for these dogs and help make society see that the breed is not the problem, then we stand the chance of lawmakers having their way, and wiping out our best friends and children forever.

  • Pitbulls are an anwsome breed of dog but they can be a little shake but most of them are really good, it just all depends on the owner and how they treat them.
    LexiEy
  • I can't say it enough: Its all in how you treat the dog that determines whether or not it displays aggressive behavior.

  • A mis-understood breed. There are no bad dogs just bad owners.
    calziz
  • i agree with calziz about they are a misunderstood breed. it definitly has to do (WITH ANY DOG) how they're raised. i work at a boarding kennel but we do some rescue. all of the pits we got in are sadly dog agressive but we do not treat them any different. theyre walked 3 times or more a day right with all of the other dogs. it's better to get them used to being around other dogs, you may not be able to train the agression out of them but it deffinitly helps them calm down. and last thing, there's nothing more i hate than when i hear people say sterio type things about pits like they need to be roughed up! theyre fighting dogs! it kills me to see them treated this way. it really says something if every dog but one out of the mike vick case was saved and did not have to be euthinised. i knew someone who rescued a dog who was in fights, sweetest thing!! i wish people would understand and not be afraid.

I saw this a while ago.

There's a selection bias among pitbull owners. I've known of so many people who get them as weapons or security systems. That is NOT what a dog is for. Sure, a pitbull could do more damage due to it's physical attributes, but the only reason they are pegged as dangerous is because of what people tend to buy them and use them for. If one were to adjust for owner, you'd probably find that the number of attacks was no different from any other breed.
  • uselessexpert- your name suits you very well! Pit's historically are 100% NOT human aggressive Think about it- a great fighting dog will fight dogs, bears, bulls, rats, ect. When the owners went in to separate the dogs would have to know that the dog would not bite them. Any dog that would bite a person- for any reason- would be killed immediately. These genes where taken out of the gene pool. Both Helen Keller and Pres. Roosevelt had pits- why would they have them if there was any chance that they would turn on them?? We are talking about a totally deaf and blind woman. If you do even a little research you would find that until the '80s there where NO reports of human aggressive pits. Until then pits were viewed as one of the best family pets- which they are. I could understand the belief of human aggressive pits if they fought HUMANS. (which they never where, or are) The only reason pits are in the news so often are horrible breeding practices. Instead of people breeding against human aggression, they are breeding them to be guard dogs, plus for some reason men seem to find them macho, and the meaner the better. If you get a pit from a good breeder- and you meet mom and dad dog and see their temperament- then you will have the great pit of the past. You have to understand that all dogs have a past- and they all once had jobs. Dogs will act how their genes tell them too, and pits are ALWAYS dog aggressive; although strict obedience training can help this to a great extent. If you want to see a real human aggressive dog get a Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian or Chow. It is so sad that people only focus on bully breeds as bad dogs because they are not. Always remember- research a breeds historic working history and the breeder you are getting your puppy from, and basic obedience training early on will eliminate a lot of headaches in the future.
