From the AP: Russian leader Vladimir Putin was in Iran Tuesday and implicitly warned the U.S. not to use a former Soviet republic to stage an attack on Iran. It was a clear reference to long-standing rumors that the U.S. was planning to use Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic, as a staging ground for any possible military action against Iran.

  • Putin better watch out or next thing we know, Bush will be adding him to the axis of evil. Are we invoking the new cold war?

  • Well, he's already very much upset with us about the Caspian pipeline and the presence of Blackwater in Azerbaijan. They were, last I knew, tasked with stocking and maintaining a base/depot there, ostensibly to support the mission of the Azeri SEALS that they were sent there to train (to protect the pipeline, of course). The pipeline allows us to move oil out of the Caspian coastal oil fields, bypassing the pipelines which previously required all oil from the immediate region to pass through Russian ports. America is playing a very tricky game here, and we're not so clever as we think. The ulterior motives are plain as day. Check out The U.S. Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce at http://www.usacc.org/ and have a look at their Officers section. *shudder* There isn't a more strategicly valuable place in the world that comes to mind right now.

  • Then again there is China. I don't think they would respond positively to a US attack on Iran given the fact they buy Iranian oil. All Iran would have to say is "China, you better help us if you want to be able to purchase our oil" and bingo, China begins selling off dollars and stops buying US securities and we begin to pee our pants.

  • Ooooh. Good point, Mark. China really does have us by the nuts in so many respects, and I too often forget to consider their interests in thinking about the Middle East.

  • I read he put off his visit to Iran after news of an assassination plot came out. Gee, wonder who is behind that?

  • With any luck there is a world of relatively sane people out there, including Putin, who are smart and tough enough to stop the neocon monster before it does even more harm.

  • Regardless of all the talks isn't it kind of scary that Putin is suposedly the voice of reason to Iran? Why would Russia all of a sudden be interested in Iran? Could it be because Iran is buying billions in arms deals from them? Naw....that would never cross our minds. C'mon people get with the program. Read your newpapers! The headlines of today are simply biblical prophesy in motion. Is it coincidence that Iran's leader wants to wipe out Isreal? No, it is written and inevitable. You want facts! Read (non-fiction) "EPICENTER" by Joel Rosenberg. This book in detail will connect todays world headlines with biblical prophesy. Hear me now believe me later. It's your responsiblity to check all this out for yourself.

  • Of course it is about the money, but as long as Russia says no, the U.S. has no choice but to obey. The U.S. is strong but it cannot afford an enemy like Russia or China. The U.S. needs to sit with it's tail between it's legs.
