  • somerandomdude - by "just in case", are you meaning just in case we wreck our own planet?

If I were on that other planet, there's no way I'd let a bunch of fools who just wrecked their own on to mine.

Plus, maybe the life on Second Earth is already wrecking their own. Or maybe we're the only ones that are that short sighted. Sigh.

  • I think a great form of social service would be a new volunteer international extraplanetary settlement team. I really want to get off this rock, Missing nukes, American Dynasties, global climate change. Where do I sign up? The world seems to be out of adventures (other than the sea). We need new philosophical thought to form from the crucible of interplanetary expansionism. Call me crazy, everyone else does.

  • JordanRoth (aka "Crazy"): I agree. I feel the world is much too small. I'd love to have something new to ponder, something new to interact with...

  • Ohhh Yeah...
NBC created a television series all about this in 1994 called "Earth 2"

  • The ancient legends speak of a planet called 'Earth.'
And I know where it is.

  • This is great!

Man is too big for his briches here on Earth. The only way towards eternal life is to allow our genes to survive in the cosmos. The delicate enviroment on earth can be saved, and should be, but shouldn't be thought of as our final resting place. If we can dream it it can happen, and here is my dream:

Man must research how to survive underwater first. this will get us accustomed to hydroponic food and air, as well as the social aspects of living in inclosed placed.

Next we must venture to the stars to colonize and learn about our universe, having learned how to survive in shuttles and pods.

Tell me what you think. am i just a dreamer?

  • Alien Planet
The drama takes place on Darwin IV, a fictional planet 6.5 light-years from Earth, with two suns and 60 percent gravity. Having identified Darwin as a world that could support life, Earth sends a pilot mission consisting of the mothership Von Braun and three probes: Balboa, Da Vinci and Newton. This unmanned fleet is responsible for finding and assessing any life-forms on Darwin IV. Initially, the expectation is to find microscopic life, but the probes soon find themselves in the middle of a developed ecosystem teeming with life of all sizes.

The viewer experiences Darwin IV through the "eyes" of the probes Ike (Newton) and Leo (Da Vinci), whose data is relayed back to the mothership and then communicated to Earth. The biological and atmospheric data from the probes and mothership are relayed to viewers through computer voice simulation and on-screen readouts.

Real scientists consider data in this planetary environment. They discuss the larger issues of the possibilities of life outside our solar system and deconstruct the animals on Darwin IV, basing the analysis on the laws of evolution and physics. Where possible, life-size animal images and the real probe prototypes will help the audience to understand the current, real basis of the search for other planets. Stephen Hawking, Michio Kaku and other big thinkers and scientists will participate in the discussion of where science is today. Other participants include Jack Horner, Craig Venter, George Lucas and NASA's chief scientist, Jim Garvin.

  • In the Guardian article, I think it's funny they call the image a "photograph", as if it was taken with a real camera. Boy, telescopes sure have gotten better!

  • I already feel sad for this 'second earth.' If we ever reach it and colonize on it, its ecosystem--probably in pristine shape-- will eventually be destroyed. If there are native inhabitants, I can only imagine how they will be dealt with. There will be warfare over land and control of areas. The pessimist in me who has observed the worst in humanity repeat itself throughout history doesn't believe a second earth will be any sort of redemption. We can't even take care of our own beautiful planet or people as it is....

  • Truly fascinating. I hope information like this will rekindle the desire for space exploration and possible colonization. I want to know that there's more than just here.

I would hope that there is life on Earth2 and pray that the alien civilization is much more advanced than ours. I do not wish that we should have to leave Earth1, but hope that their technology will help us and teach us something about how slow we are moving in the wrong direction. Developing the technology to efficiently sustain life in space has a direct correlation to the way we live at home. Thanks for the Tang.

Good to the last drop. Why do we insist on exhausting resources before finding an alterative? That's like washing your hands until they bleed. You're clean all right, but now you have more work to do. You can't use that hand as much. Productivity goes down. Wounds take time to heal. And when it does heal, is it better than before? What if we lost a finger? Shooting ourselves in the foot is fun too. If it were possible to pass a broken foot down to our children, then maybe we would stop shooting.

War also has its influences on tech. But a race is so much more fun than a war could ever be. Take heart, hopefully, Space Race2 will pull us out of this rut. Let's keep talking about it, but let's also do something about it.

If you should find yourself having a tough time coping with the day to day lack of advanced technology, just whip out your iPhone, set it on the ground, do your best rain dance and repeatedly chant the words "Earl Grey, hotÂ… Earl Grey, hot."

  • That's just it. Where is the technology? Imagine if we used our resources to help everyone on the planet. If we develope the technology to bring sustainable energy to our own communities we can share this with regions that are suffering. Advancing technology for a higher purpose rather than for mere consumption is the answer that will lead to more solutions. No hunger, no homeless, no sickness, no war. Isn't that what we all should want? It is inhumane deprive those in need of technology, nor is it humane to refuse to implemement it into our own lives. When will we start working together as a planet? Are we so different? Do we not want the same things for our children? We are running a race against eachother, but in the end it is only with ourselves. Please pass the sunscreen.
