Electro Rap becoming the norm?

MonsoonSeason
Electro-Rap (or smut rap, some call it) is a relatively new genre pioneered by acts like Spank Rock, Plastic Little, Amanda Blank, the Cool Kids, Bonde do Role and Flosstradamus & Kid Sister categorized by loud synthesizers, huge bass hits, incredibly dirty lyrics, and the emphasis on style over substance. With mainstream producers such as Timbaland and Pharrell starting to embrace electronic elements over more traditional hip-hop elements, is this newest wave of rap the way of the future? Or is this just a throwback to 80s-era Miami Bass?

    • Go see them live. Suddenly you realise the lyrics are all tongue-in-cheek and its just one, massive, beautiful party. Notice I didn't say 'partay', that's not SR.

    • I love their sound, but I'm tired of making excuses for such vapid rhymes. It's not offensive, it's just corny. Style and substance need not be mutually exclusive.

    • Not too keen on the intro but once it gets going, it's good. And it's really made me want to dig my old Sega Megadrive out from underneath my bed tonight...
