Unity a Consequence of W. Virginia Hate Crime

This actually happened a month or two ago but I feel it's still relevant. Apparently overshadowed by other, more "important" hate crimes, school shootings, and what not, the story of a "20 year-old black West Virginia woman who was allegedly kidnapped, raped and tortured by six white career criminals, three of whom are women" isn't garnering much national attention, but it is certainly affecting West Virginia in a big way. At least its sparking some helpful dialog about racism.

  • hey kudos to you for keeping this on the front burner. i heard this story and couldn't BELIEVE it didn't get more press... the only upswing is that she gets a little bit more privacy but those bastards deserve the maximum penalty. keep it up.

  • Interesting article.
The info about the history of West Virginia made me think of the 1987 John Sales film, Matewan.

  • This was a heinous crime, and thank the gods the law showed up to liberate the victim. Why the Jena 6 get all the publicity while this story languishes is beyond me. I just saw a Bioneers presentation today that stated that, for every column inch environmental stories have gained in the last odd number of years, civil rights stories have lost an inch. That's coincidence, no cause and effect relationship was implied, but it's interesting to see the trends. We're about to be madly distracted by environmental issues, but taking care of those issues is also an opportunity to address civil rights issues as well, yes?

  • bioneers is more
Phidippides, I have been attending every day of Bioneers New Mexico. Glad to see you caught some of it wherever you are. The point you raise was made by Majora Carter. Also, Van Jones talks about these issues. The environmental movement MUST be a social justice movement as well. It is pointless otherwise.
