Baktis, along with business partner Vanessa Chekroun, runs the Mutts and Moms agency from which Ellen DeGeneres adopted her dog. Ellen then was unable to keep the dog, so she gave it to her hairdresser Cheryl's family, which includes her 12-year-old daughter Ruby. Baktis told "Access Hollywood" yesterday that they've begun receiving death threats. "My life is being threatened, this is horrible. I rescue dogs. I can't believe this."

What did she expect?

  • The lesson here is, don't try and stand-up to those more powerful than you and always break your rules for the person who cries loudest.

  • ...Hmmmm.

Not to mention taking a dog out of a perfectly good home so as to adhere to the rules, which by the way, are there to protect the dogs, not the rescue organization. Following rules blindly without questioning their purpose or functionality smacks of idiocy.

Don't get me wrong, Ms. Degeneres should definitely be penalized for not adhering to a contract she signed that is binding by law, but to make the pup and his new family suffer for her blunder seems oxymoronic. Isn't that counter to what these organizations are trying to achieve?

  • As someone who has adopted a rescue dog, I totally side with the organization. There are rules in place to protect abused animals, all of whom have issues that require patience and understanding. To risk the welfare of animals so as not to inconvenience children is a joke. If the girls truly loved "Iggy" they would put that dog (and other animals) ahead of themselves.

Ellen is not a trained professional in assessing what and what does not qualify as a good home. Hell, she couldn't even be trusted to read or honor a contract. Nor does she even bother to concern herself with the welfare of the animals at the shelter, which will likely suffer a huge financial setback, or these women.

  • I also rescued my pup from a similar organization, and agree that the rules are there for a very important reason and should be followed. I think Ellen should have read her contract and understood the terms and conditions, as with any important document. She didn't. She should be penalized for that.

The rules are designed to protect animals from being adopted into homes or situations where they are mistreated, neglected and/or abused. This is clearly not the case here, and while I agree that Ellen should have behaved differently, she didn't. She apologized on national television and asked the organization to please bring the dog back to the home that she had found for him because he was happy and loved there.

There were a million ways to handle this situation differently. I don't believe either party handled it correctly.

  • That's just it: if you start making exceptions for these particular children, then the rules are meaningless. No children under 14. It can't get any clearer.

Besides, they can go to a regular shelter and adopt a loving mutt. Ellen has taken this way too far.

  • i also rescued my dog. and i live in california, where people take their dogs and pets very seriously. that's fine. but couldn't the organization just go to the family's house, check them out, then allow the family to sign a new contract. what is the big deal? why did they take the animal back? bizarro.
