  • Another interesting Cypriot refugee story
What is it about Cyprus and the refugees?

  • It just makes me thankful for where I live and the freedom afforded to us in the USA.

  • I believe this points out another good reason why the U.S. occupation was not totally useless, like much of Americans claim. Saddam Hussein was a president who didn't provide equal rights to all the Iraqi citizens. He was the Weapon of Mass Destruction. Who knows how many more Shi'ites he would have ordered to be executed if he was still in power.

  • Andrew, or is it Afitz, Cyprus gets so many asylum seekers and refugees because it is the closest EU member state to the Middle East--and most importantly-- the northern "Turkish" section is a mostly-illegal area. This transnationally-suspect area has gray laws in regards to many issues, particularly settlement. Turkey has been packing north Cyprus with settlers in an attempt to gain a proxy power on the isle, one of the results of this arbitrary and loose re-settlement is that it is easy to sneak in. So Iranians and Iraqis are moving into the North, sneaking into the EU south and hope to enjoy the benefits of human rights that affect all EU states. Good question.

  • I totally believe that this sums up the whole situation to its most basic element: teaching children how to die for their religion, not how to live for their religion. The United States should be attacking this ideology, not with guns and torture, but with words and education. However, this is easier said than done.

  • Refugees sound-off
Before we changed the site over, a few of the men featured in this pod had the chance to sound-off in the comments.

  • Dear Current,

You've been so good about staying updated with this pod and my Iraqi friends that I wanted to let you know that two of the four refugees--Jawad and Ammer-- gained refugee status and now are eligible for limited amounts of work and they can find asylum in other countries. The threat of returning to wartorn Iraqi is over! Jawad is going to try to get into Mexico and from there come to the US. They see this as a giant success and I share their happiness. In their message to me they thanked Current for your
    support. So Congratulations!

    Best,

    Adam

  • while I really like learning about religions and respect them, its to this extreme they were talking about that totally takes away from a person being human.
Religion, in this extreme radical case, claims to elevate a person to a higher meaning yet completely suffocates people in their natural desires/ways.
it all goes back to tolerance in the long run...
