it was time. Although the performance based offer had him potentially making $8 million dollars. He chose not to take that model...so it was time for him to go. I personally like a performance based model.

Free agents could follow Torre out of BronxI hear you on that, philnyce, but he was one of the most successful managers of the modern era, and the Yankees' failure weren't really his fault, in my opinion. And the Yankees may lose some important players because of it, but maybe that's not a bad thing.

I love that there are people in this world that can turn down 8 million dollars. Wow.

True, but I think it's not really about the money anymore for him. He wanted some more respect than he has been getting from Steinbrenner lately with the playoff victory ultimatum and all that, how could you go back?

for sure..but I still think all in all it was time to move on. Hopefully we can get back to basics here. Develop the fine young players we have and work on putting a team together that has more role players than superstars.
Once a baseball team or a city in this case is content with coming in second place and rewarding the manager for doing so, then I think it's time for a change. -
wasn't this just a way for Torre (and Steinbrenner) to save face? ...instead of headlines screaming that he was fired?

The glory days of Showalter need to come back to the BronxIt is time to bring back Showalter and make him the modern day BIlly Martin...

To those who find themselves amazed that Torre turned down an $8 million contract, consider what the undertone of the offer said to him: "Thanks for the last twelve years, four World Championships and new baseball legends... but we're just not sure you're giving this your level best. So here, if you get to the post season, you'll get a bonus. And if you get farther than that, you get another one! Maybe now you'll try a bit harder." As a Yankees fan, I'm glad Torre left with his dignity, and I'm of the opinion that Steinbrenner, Sr. can't retire fast enough, the old coot. Let's just hope we can hold onto A-Rod, Rivera, and Posada now.
