Malaria Vaccine for Africa's Babies

There is still no clinically approved vaccine for malaria, which kills more than a million people each year, many of them babies and most in Africa. The World Health Organization estimates that a child dies of malaria roughly every 30 seconds. A malaria vaccine trial in Mozambique has shown that the treatment is safe and effective for babies aged just a few weeks.

  • This is great news. I was in Kenya many times in the eighties, and gave blood several times in the Wamba hospital up in northern Kenya, in the hope of saving babies and toddlers, but each time, it was too late to help these little ones who died anyway. I had Kenyan friends whose children had malaria, and although I managed to save one of them from death by grabbing him and holding him in my arms under a cool shower for at least 30 minutes to bring his fever down before taking him to hospital, he died some years later of another severe bout. Malaria is a scourge, and global warming will allow it to spread northward and southward where it doesn't yet exist or no longer exists, so an effective vaccine is vital.

    Melinda Gates, Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, opened the Gates Malaria Forum in Seattle this morning with a call to embrace the effort to eradicate malaria.
