THUG CULTURE IS A CANCER DESTROYING BLACK AMERICA

If white entertainers were making millions singing about the slaughter of black men and mistreatment of black women, city streets would clog with protesters. Demonstrators would pack the halls of Congress. Commerce would grind to a halt as black activists demanded boycotts. But somehow, the violence and misogyny of T.I., 50 Cent and Nelly are less inflammatory.

Yes, a lot of their music is purchased by white consumers, as a lot of it is marketed by white executives. But blaming The Man seems shallow and irresponsible when black Americans are abetting their own destruction.

This link provides an interesting opinion on "thug america," yet another example of an individual pointing the finger at hip-hop when it comes to certain societal short-comings.

Personally, I think it's easy to blame something like hip-hop and rap music. Yet at the same time I still feel we all need to take some individual accountability for our actions. Plenty of people listen to gangsta rap and don't commit crimes because of it, which goes to show it isn't just the music or the image portrayed. Maybe it is a factor, but only in those situations where it is allowed to be one.

Maybe everyone is to blame. Maybe we all need to look at ourselves.

The reason why hip hop culture is so easy to blame is because it is a global juggernaut, one that is extremely influential. Hip hop culture is youth culture--universally so--providing "entertainment" that dehumanizes and demonizes people on the basis of color, gender, and sexual orientation.

To pull any punches on hate music simply b/c it perpetuates the status quo or its employees (rappers) happen to be black is outrageous, especially since rap revels in anti-black racism so much so that hardly anyone can even feign enough outrage to denounce the terrible toll murders are taking on black Americans (check the link).

Yes this is very true; I have felt like this since I was in grade school.

I mean, I know I'm white but, hipHOP is like the PuNkRoCk of my generation and it has influenced me greatly. So I am sad to see it's decline into what it has become today. (Diamonds, and jewlery, glorifying the violence rather than trying to change it, nonsense!!)

But thankfully help is on the way; With artists like Chicago's own Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco among a few others, it's coming back.

Rap has a conscience, and some thoughtfulness that was taken from it. So just support the good ones and try not to let those around you be swayed to support the other, unscrupulous ones.
