So What Are You Going To DO?

sajh
What does hunger have to do with poverty? A child who is unequipped to learn because of hunger and poverty is more likely to be poor as an adult. Many adults who receive assistance from Food Banks have to choose between buying food or paying rent. Many senior citizens who receive assistance from food banks have to choose between buying food or paying for medication. (America's Second Harvest - hunger statistics www.secondharvest.org )

Clearly, one small part of getting rid of poverty is feeding the hungry. Helping your local food bank is a good way to combine resources and help your community thrive.

I'm starting a food drive for the SF food bank, and I'm going to show you how easy it is to do it. I will be posting updates regularly on this month-long event.

I'm interested in finding out how YOU contribute to the poverty solution. Post your responses below!

    • Here's our full food barrel and I'm happy to say that we also collected a bunch of $$ for the Food Bank as well. Every dollar donated to the food bank = 3 meals (in SF, figures may vary in your area).

    • I'm doing my part to help out those less fortunate this holiday season. I know what it's like to be alone and poor. However, to get philosophical, there is and always will be economic diversity. It is a social requirement. If we were economically equal, we would be living in a socialist society, and even then there are the more fortunate and less fortunate. Having come up from destitute to middle class, I accept the iniquities of a democratic society, and offer help to those that accept my open hand.

    • Food drives are great and necessary but that doesn't really stand up against poverty. Food drives are acts of charity but poverty is a matter of economic injustice and require changes to economic and political systems in order to get at the real causes of poverty.
