This is mind boggling... or maybe eye opening? Some body part is doing something right now!

I looked around for photos and didn't come up with anything. Here's a flash app that animates how trash moves off the coasts and swirls in the North Pacific Gyre.

Still, kind of hard to imagine the reality without some visuals.

Yeah, I tried googling it, and all I got was images of some dude taking out his trash can and some other not-so-interesting piles of trash around the world... but nothing in the ocean... Someone really should get out there to the middle of the Pacific and snap some pics or video... Perhaps Current TV? ;)

Thanks for sharing the Green Peace visual though, it helps make the whole concept more... tangible.

yes we should definitely try to get some video of this. if it's twice the size of texas, or even just the size of texas, it should not be hard to find. why doesnt Google satelite show it?

I was wondering why Google satellite doesn't show this myself... All I could come up with is that maybe the sludge blends in with the dark color of the ocean. I imagine that it's pretty hard to actually photograph if it is indeed in the middle of the Pacific, (although I'd think that some ships would be bound to cross through it and take notice)... I guess it just requires a field trip...

Perhaps long-winded, but still interesting satirical follow-up...

I just read about this and this is what the article states "It is undetectable by overhead satellite because it's 80% plastic and therefore transculent. The plastic moves just beneath the surface, from an inch to depths of 300 feet."

i still don't think the mass exists. i need to see photographs or video. sure, there's a ton of plastic crap out there, but as far as some solid mass double the size of Texas that, say, one could walk on or inhabit - I don't think it exists. the media is at it once again, whipping up hysteria through sensational headlines and inconclusive evidence.
