Selfish men use flirtatious facial movements, including raising their eyebrows, smiling and nodding, to mask their true nature.
Dr Clark, whose work is highlighted in this week's New Scientist magazine, said: "Our study suggests that being flirtatious is particularly important for men who do not display themselves as wonderfully altruistic people, and who are seeking short-term relationships."
