My concern wasn't the effectiveness of the U.S. military, but rather the aftermath once we deposed Saddam Hussein.

This may have been interesting in 2004 but I think this a fact that most Americans know. As to whether they accept it is a different story altogether.

What is the point of this pod? Specifically, what are you doing to stop an upcoming attack on Iran? Apparently nothing. You didn't have the courage to cast a Nay vote on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment. You abstained, which is cowardly. But you're here telling us the invasion of Iraq was a mistake? You had a chance to earn the support of Americans and trump Hillary by proving your mettle on Kyl-Lieberman. You choked on game day. Goodbye.
-
You are stating what we all ready know. Not voting against the Kyle-Lieberman amendment, this is not putting a fresh face on politics, that is politics as usual.

Interesting. What do you think should be done to stop the imminent and premeditated attack on Iran?

All of those are valid points, though it would be interesting to hear what exit strategy you would propose.
-
what about the false pretenses for invading in the first place? It sounds like you don't mind the invasion in principle, just the lack of planning for the aftermath and the fact that we didn't 'finish the job' in Afghanistan...
-
There won't be any kind of attack on Iran.
Please, stop this paranoia.
@klenga
Yes those were pretty good reasons to oppose Bush's war in 2002. -
I hope you're right stardate. Rewind to 2000, did you see us occupying Iraq back then?//////////////////////////////
Obama, what are you saying? You don't sound so concerned about it, what ever it may be. The title to this piece is perfect, " No clear exit strategy", because it doesn't sound like you have one now either.-

Talk is cheap, what are you going to do about the mess the government, which you are a part of, has us in. You and the rest of congress sat around and let Bush get us into this mess and now you say it was a mistake, why didn't you speak up back then.
-
Only, it doesn't sound like he thinks it was a mistake, just that there should have been a better exit strategy.

he actually did speak out against the war in 2002... and I missed it the first time, but he mentioned that Iraq was not a threat to our security in this video.
I agree though that this video comes across in general as "OK idea, bad timing and execution". It's may be my cynicism at work, but I'm guessing that that is the most mainstream, well-tested line to take on the war at this point... -
Apparently people here haven't informed themselves very well. He was against the war before it was waged, he spoke out vehemently at an anti-war rally when it was political suicide to do it and he was in the middle of a campaign for the Senate. He has been against it all along and if his plan had passed, withdrawal would have begun this past March and concluded in May of 08.
Obama doesn't do the politically expedient thing..like Edwards and Clinton did with the Iraq authorization. He speaks the truth, whether it's popular or not.
Also, he didn't choose to campaign instead of voting on Kyl-Lieberman. The Senate transcripts clearly show that Harry Reid told them that there would be no vote in the near future. He left to campaign in NH and then Reid rushed a vote on it with one hour's notice. Obama had already spoken out against it and would have voted against it had he known the vote was going to take place. He was THERE the day the vote was scheduled to take place.
If this country continues to rely on videos and a biased media to inform them, they are going to make another bad choice this election. If you can find your way here, you can find your way to his website, speeches, positions, and legislative record.
This man was right from day one..and even called the results to a tee. That's called judgment. That is supposed to be what people want in a president..not convenient political sound-bites that change with the polls. -
Please tell us what your exit strategy is for the Iraq Occupation.
-
Well, after feeling excited that you chose to become part of current TV...hopeful that you cared enough to be a part of a conversation in stead of just talking at us, I now feel thouroughly disappointed. You talk, but say nothing. You're being safe and not telling us what plans you think would work. You still aren't having a conversation with the American public.
I do commend you for being here though, -
You must distinguish yourself by stating unequivocally that the war is a crime follow Kucinich's recommendations. You must stand up against the threats to Iran otherwise your opinion is worthless and spineless.

he wasn't talking about an exit strategy... i can post videos of people not talking about things too...
-
I've found sometimes people, even presidential candidates need to hear the obvious. Mr Obama seems to be as you say, psychooys, not talking about the situation as it is today.
-
Your stating the problem but not the solution. How do you plan to end the war?
-
Mr Obama is forgetting that this is a war for oil and imperial power based upon lies by a corrupt administration. His comment that Al Quyda perpetrated the 9-11-01 attack is naive in the extreme because there is no clear evidence of that. In fact, there is ample evidence that the entire incident should be examined in much further detail because some on the original 9-11 panel admit that the investigation was "planned to fail". This post in not workin out for Mr Obama. I will just go out on a limb and speak for the collective we here. I know it is wrong to speack for WE but I am gonna do it. We want to talk about this. We want to talk to each other. We want you to talk to us about this. We do not want a pre-chewed sound bite from some safe interview. We are over the sound bites. We are over the pretty make up and shiny lights on our screen. Talk to us.
-
I respect Mr. Obama as well as Mr. Kucinich for opposing, like the late great Paul Wellstone, the war in Iraq. None of the other candidates will get my vote because of their failure to see the injustice (based on classic just war criteria) of pre-emptive war and its terrible consequences both for the people of Iraq and for America's reputation in the world. Unfortunately, neither Obama nor Kucinich have built campaigns that stand a chance against Hillary Clinton, whose foreign policy judgments continue to be dismal. Our only hope to get out of Iraq is to have a fiercely anti-war candidate who can win the nomination, and who has the international stature to fix the mess in Iraq.
The latest poll from CBS has Clinton with 37 percent, Gore with 32 percent, and Obama with 16 percent. Gore has the money, the experience, and the good judgment to beat Clinton. If Gore was to get in the race and combine his campaign with Obama's (as a presidential-vice presidential team), they would be able to beat the Clinton political machine. That would be unusual, but the usual ways of politics are no longer acceptable.
Please, Mr. Obama, recognize that the future of this country is more important than the slim chance that you could come from far behind and beat Clinton at the last minute. This is far bigger than you. Tell Al Gore you will back him if he gets into the presidential race and combine your compaign with his so that we can have truly progressive, truly visionary leadership for the next sixteen years. It is in your best interest and the country's best interest and the world's best interest for Gore to be the democratic nominee for president in 2008, and for you to be his vice president and successor.
Gore-Obama 2008: It is the only way to beat the Clintons and the Republicans. It is the only way for us to get real change in this country, in a defining moment for our democracy. Surely you must understand this by now.
You are in my prayers, Sir. -
I wish you the best in dealing with this war situation. This is not easy problem to solve. However, Al Gore's view on this is 100% in right direction. Please do consult him before it is too late.

I don't see how the United States can possibly pull out. The Governing body in the US made a diabolic decision and now have created total chaos. To pull out now without having a sound plan in place will only aggravate the hatred towards the United States as we all watch the slaughter in Iraq and eventually in the U.S. itself.

Mr Barrack Hussein Obama, you seem like a very nice man, however you need to wait and get some solid experience behind you. How can you possible compare your self to Hillary Clinton? You started very nice and now you have become just like all the politicians..exagerating your possitives and hideing your shortcomings. How can the American People really have confidence in you. Just becuase your articulate and talk about change?Having lived in Kenya and a muslim backgroud and a show host behind you because you are black? Mind you I would not vote not because you are black but because you are not experienced enough. You say that you voted no for the war, however if there were threats of mass distruction, your vote was a naive, irresponsible and unexperience vote. That Bush and Channey lied is biside the point, because we did not know they were lying. Therefore you may be able to fool some of the people some of the time, but you certainly can not fool all of the people all of the time. I for one would probably vote for you in 8 Years but I can not make a maybe he will be a good president or maybe he has experience. These are not the time to vote for maybe's because that would not be a responsible vote. My vote now will be for
Hillary Rodham Clinton, a true leader with experience, passion and conviction. No matter what you say about her, I can only advise sit, listen and learn from her. My vote can not be given to someone that may be a risk. and Mr. Barrack Hussein Obama voting for you would be a very big risk that no American should take. -
Agian!!! inexperience comes to play here. Talk is cheap! You have not given us a real solution you only reiterate what we the American People already know. Sit it out Mr. Barrack Hussein Obama take notes, get some experience and let he leader of today take over. Hillary Rodham Clinton! WE can not have a wanta be President with not experience and lack of foreign policy.
These are critical and crucial times and the American People can not take a chance on you this time around. We all know you voted no for the war, your acting like Giuliani with 911, Give solutions to the problems, you reiterate the same old and you talk about change.Again We the American People can not vote for you because we can not take that Risk.!!!

i seek to hold senator obama accountable for his opposition to the iraq war since 002. if this is an issue or stance thathe champions, then there is a clear cut exit strategy for him: begin an immediate withdrawal of our troops (f elected president).
-
What? THis is what you wanted to share with us?
Senator Obama, you built your US Senate race 2003-2004 on two main themes, the Iraq War and the injustices of the US Patriot Act. In the 2 years you were in the US Senate, you could not even vote to end the war, let a lone write or Co sponsor one single Bill. In June of 2006 Senator Feingold finally had another strong ally to put his name on his Bill to end the war date certain, that was Senator Kerry and you could not even vote on that Bill. And on those injustices of the Patriot Act? You voted to ReAuthorize it. And these are just votes and you expect we're supposed to accept your inexperience and your record of votes and just trust you are supposed to be a GOOD change when everything you've done in the past is a slap in the face.
That includes the Bankruptcy Amendment to cap interest for debtors to a maximum of 30 percent, you couldn't even give the people that.
And what of this record can you tell us why we're supposed to just believe you will do different than what we've already seen? -
It's easy to talk about problems but we want solutions!
-
Why all the attention on Saddam? What happened to Osama did he just disappear... Opppsss... he did! What are you going to do about that little skeleton in our closet? I dont blame a running canidate for the Bush mistakes but what do you plan to do about it, why should I get my friends to vote for you?
