So, this new air control traffic system is supposed to help with delays??... Cause You Tube is FILLED with videos of delays. My last flight was delayed - United said it was because of weather in Boston. Ironically, my parents were flying from the same airport, to the same airport, scheduled to leave about 15 minutes after I was, but, they were on American. They left and arrived on time. I was delayed 3 hours. WTF?? Was United lying?

That video is genius and so telling.......

I understand that the radar system used today is based on 1950's radar. Wonder what the accuracy of that system is. Scary.<P>
Do some research on ADS-B and see how the facts really stand up about accident rates, errors and possibilities for data integration. For example, ADS-B was piloted by Alaska (Capstone)--"Rates of accidents in categories specifically targeted by Capstone have decreased, and the rate of accidents for Capstone-equipped aircraft has been lower than for those not equipped." It looks like Alaska Air Carriers is going to move forward with Capstone: http://www.alaskaaircarriers.org/servlet/content/40.html
Also, think about how the new system affects jobs nationwide...and government contracts. Government jobs--almost impossible to lay anyone off from. If this new system doesn't require all the air traffic controllers and maintenance folks to keep the old system running...where do they go? Lovely government contracts. Do you see why folks would hang onto the old system? $$ baby

Please read Don Brown's piece on ADS-B.

StacyR above attacks my labor union, the Professional Airways Systems Specialists for a media piece on ADS-B. Like Halliburton, Walter Reed and Blackwater the American tax payer is getting raped by large federal contractors performing work for the FAA. I wonder if Stacy is aware of the FAA's track record on large contracts outsourcing federal work to the private sector and how poorly the contracts have performed. Lockheed Martin took over the Automated Flight Service Stations and it's been a fiasco. Lockheed immediately asked for more money once they got the contract and the FAA fined them a few million dollars for failing to perform as agreed to in their contract. The Department of Transportation Inspector General, Congress and AOPA have all cited huge problems and agree service has dramatically deteriorated. The FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) program awarded to Harris Corporation is also fiasco. There have been thousands of delays across the nation due to the poor service provided under that contract. There were recently 555 delays across the nation from one problem at the Memphis Air Route Traffic Control Center. There were also hundreds of delays due to problems in Chicago and California. I recently went on the FAA's webpage during the Chicago FTI outage that caused over 100 delays and the FAA was reporting weather problems at Chicago to the public but the weather was clear.

Here's another media story about an FAA Telecommunication Infrastructure (FTI) outage in Florida. Every month or two, there is a serious FTI outage reported in the news. There are a lot of serious incidents that never make the news. AT&T is cited as the culprit in this story but they're a subcontractor for Harris who holds the contract with FAA. We had a much more stable system under the Leased Interfacility National Airspace System Communications System (LINCS) that was provided by MCI.
