that made a pretty popular electric car a while back. And yet now, they're pursuing hydrogen, a technology that's much less widely available and supported than...electricity, which is already available everywhere in the U.S. What's up?

The most sustainable way of transportation is electric power charged by solar and wind systems. All of these systems are available and being used today. YET…. They make it to the bottom of the list when you hear media pundits, corporations and politicians talk about it. The main reason the solar-wind-electric system is not on the top of the list is that it works too well. Once the system (panels/turbines/grid) are in place there is not much else to sell to the public. Regular maintenance will be needed but nothing like the hourly pumping of fuel into fuel tanks and the ripping of resources from the earth. This pisses off the companies that want to sell you stuff over and over and over again. ANY “sustainable” system that keeps a version of fuel in the loop is not as sustainable as a system that requires NO FUEL such as wind/solar. If the money that goes into subsidizing nuclear, hydrogen and biofuels would go into improving battery technologies, solar and wind systems we would see relief in many of the worlds problems including social injustices, war over resources, economic discord and all of the tragic issues caused by global warming. To see why this would work so well we just need to step away and look at the long-term projection of our existence on this planet. Do we want to keep obsessing over who is going to make money from the next venture or do we want take care of each other and the planet that has been providing us all these years without charging a dime for what we take from her?

Most of us cannot afford one of these yet but maybe, just maybe, public transit should invest heavily in these clean burning vehicles - when they become available.
