Neither of the two options today (stay and fight or withdraw) are viable solutions. We are having a false debate about what to do in Iraq. There needs to be a different path that involves other countries, in particular ones that today we do not deign to speak to.

  • unfortunately this young man is correct, however very naive. we cannot get the other players in the area to participate in any effort on our behalf. We and all western powers are the infidel. it is heresy to ally with us while we have our troops on the soil of a brother moslem country. that's the simple truth. this did not start here. ask the french and english. they left this part of the world 60 years ago with thier tales between thier legs. we simply have to get out! there is no victory. bring the troops home and give them jobs protecting our borders. spend the money here where our security issues are fixable.

  • It is, of course, always a pleasure to be called 'naive.' I agree with your analysis of how we are viewed. I'm not sure, however, when you say they view us as the 'infidel' if you are simply writing off their point of view, or acknowledging that we have committed innumerable acts of 'self-interest' over the decades that have rightfully engendered tremendous mistrust towards us. I agree that there is no way to win in Iraq; however, leaving will very likely create another Talibanic-style Afghanistan, and no western power can afford that. We are caught in a terrible bind. My naive suggestion is made with the reflection that we must do something to regain trust with them. This means a wholesale change in our foreign policy goals (I'm pessimistic on this front, but still see no other path to security), and the proposal in my video above is meant to take a first step towards unwinding the intense hatred they have towards us that has built up over many years of humiliation. Check out the fabulous book "Iran Awakenings" to get a sense of how Iran is viewing us right now. I understand them, even as I anxiously hope that we can halt their nuclear aspirations... I talk more about both these topics on my blog contextforhumanity.com.
