Torture for the Greater Good

I was recently told by a young couple that they felt that there were instances where torture should be used. They expressed the view that if the torturing of one or even ten individuals can save thousands, then it should be condoned.
I asked them if they were aware of the Declaration of Independence, US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They said that they were. I told them that thousands of Americans died to make those documents and the concepts behind them. I continued that millions of Americans since then had been bloodied, myself included, to see to it that those documents are preserved in tact today. If you deny one individual his right to Habeus Corpus (to know with what he is charged) or send him out of the country to be tortured, you shred those documents and their precepts. If one individuals rights can be forfeited, then any individuals rights can be forfeited. If the people no longer have these rights then we are no longer free.
