The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

Cuba, an isolated island nation, rebuilt its quality of life following the collapse of cheap oil, supplied by the former Soviet Union. This fascinating and empowering film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy.

This also gives us an excellent example of how to deal with the crisis that is facing us, how to survive after oil becomes unavailable, how to feed ourselves and empower farmers.

Wow, thanks vierotchka, now it's official I love Cuba. Looks like they might be having the last laugh, if it weren't for the embargo, they probably wouldn't have been as innovative. The average Cuban lost 20lbs? I think I've finally discovered the diet for Americans. We finally loose that 20lbs and save the planet in the process. Too bad I'll never be able to go to Cuba (Wink WinK.)

"If we don't take care of the earth, earth will take care of us!"

"Today 80%of Cuba's agriculture is Organic"

"Cuba needed to develop mass transportation system overnight!"

"Government vehicles are required to pick up anyone that needs a ride."

"..after five years you hate it." (Most Americans wouldn't last five minutes.)

"Everyone in Cuba has a place to live."

"85% of the people own their own home."

And I could quote on and on. Definitely worth the watch. This should be required viewing for all Americans. Too bad our leadership isn't smart enough to understand things like this. The ones that are able to understand are apparently in the pocket of some corporation. :(

I found it truly admirable how the mindset of the people has changed. They have now acknowledged the interconnectedness of each other and the environment. They have found truly a unique opportunity to have a successful experiment on such a vast scale. Bravo Cuba

It goes to show you, we can survive without using gratuitous amounts of oil. We need to localize our resources and unify our communities.
