Because it is the solutions that matter and the speed at which they come now from business, governments, and individuals... Not simply the address from where they come or just catering to one candidate or person for political reasons when all must make this the cornerstone of what they talk about on a moral basis because it is that important. And in this instance, if Mr. Gore can influence not only the global community to act now which he is, but ALL candidates for office regardless of political party because of pressure brought to bear by the global community (which is why I hope he will be in Bali this December,) that will bring about the changes all the quicker, and that is the point of all of this. ///Why Gore Shouldn't Run
Staying out of D.C. makes Gore the smartest environmentalist in the country

By JESSICA C. COGGINS
After the 2000 elections, Democrats around the country found themselves at a loss for words. The unthinkable had happened and George W. Bushso inept he cant even pronounce the word nuclearwas moving into the White House. And for the loser of that election? It seems Al Gore 69 consoled himself with donuts and grew a beard any aspiring Mountain Man would be proud to bear.
Flash forward several years and Gores an Oscar-winning, PowerPoint junkie. Hes included in Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People in the World under scientists and thinkers. By all accounts hes single-handedly credited with teaching an entire nation about global warmingand the Nobel committee agrees.
Ever since the success of An Inconvenient Truth, were looking at a newer, more relaxed version of our one-time Vice President. Indeed, this freshness looks good on him; he looks more comfortable standing next to Leonardo DiCaprio than he ever did next to Bill Clinton. Stepping out of politics really was the best decision of Gores life.
Every time the question arises of whether hell make a last-minute bid for the presidency, Gore consistently maintains that his place is outside D.C. Thank God.
Ive heard some environmentalists call Gores decision not to return to Washington inconceivable. While it sure is cool to be friends with Bono or Madonna, common wisdom dictates that the President of the United States is still the man (or woman) who can champion issues to greatest effect. If you want to change the world, were told, pack your bags and head toward the swamp-land of Washington.
Gores predicament actually represents a transformation in how environmental action, and to a greater extent political activity, is shaped. Were witnessing a battle between two very different camps: those who believe change must come from the hallways of D.C. and others who think the very oppositeits the people, en masse, who will make the difference.
According to recent polls President Bush is remaining steady at a 29 percent approval rating. His counterparts in the U.S. Congress fare even worse at an abysmal 14 percent. Americans arent necessarily clamoring to hear anything from an inept and ineffectual president and a Congress. So maybe Gore really is onto something.

Just a simple interest in your postions Jan, sorry if it feels like badgering... how can we get the majority of Americans to join us without a leader like Gore in office?

I guess I'm hearing something different from him then. However, I was asking for YOUR solutions how we as a people can be AS effective without him in office. As I have written on another thread, I am already doing the things suggested by Gore to decrease my carbon footprint and by offsetting the rest, & yet realistically I can't change what all the other people in the world choose to do. I still want to understand your solution for how we can solve these problems without a leader like Gore (especially when he himself stated that being the president would be the most influential position from which to make necessary changes from).

Mr. Gore has already proved it to you. It isn't my fault if you aren't paying attention.

Jan, what I'm saying is I want you to convince me that something else could work better than encouraging Al to run. In a debate, if person A can convince person B their position is better, more effective, etc, then person B may come to agree with person A. As person B here, I can't evaluate which position is better until you lay out for me what your positions (or solutions) are.

Sorry hombre76, but the Arctic melting isn't going to stop now regardless of who sits in a White House with columns now. And no law enacted can be enforced unless people feel the moral imperative to enforce it and abide by it. This is a GLOBAL crisis, and that is where Mr. Gore is fighting it, from a GLOBAL position and I for one believe he is doing the right thing now.

NY Daily News...Google "Al Gore" and you'll see it. And you don't have any solutions, or you would be discussing them instead of trying to shut other opinions down. And it matters because it shows there is no noble cause behind this begging for the most part... it is for pure political expedience.

There's another meme: draft Gore people are guilty Nader folk. Please state the exact source for the article you referenced. First, I've never met a person that happens to be true for, & second, I don't see why it would matter even if it were true. More importantly, how is making that statement an attempt at working toward solutions Jan? I'm tiring of the name-calling and I truly want to discuss solutions with you Jan. What are your solutions?

This is in response to JanforGore and what she said about why Gore shouldn't run.
We were all dealt the same hand in 2000 when Al lost to Bush because he bought the election. We voted Al in and he was to gracious a man to bring this country to a civil war, because we all know we would have fought had he asked us. Well, today we see the horror that this country has been brought to by Bush and his croanies. Not only this country is in a mess but the entire world is feeling the effects of this administration. Al has dealt with this problem now as an individual and has opened the minds of the people of this world, but governments all around the world are not listening to their people. They do nothing but put bandages on a problem that is killing our world. Bandages don't work when you need an operation. The world needs to work aggressively to curb global warming and it's effects. It is time for Al to take the position we all voted him in to do in 2000 and address this global crisis as a world leader and not and individual. He has a nation and a world population that needs him at this historic time. By becoming the President of the United States he will have at his disposal the attention of the world and the tools necessary to legislate solutions to the global warming crisis and many others that humanity faces. As far as your reference to Nader supporters, I personally never voted for the man as I felt that his solutions were not well thought out. It is propoganda that Nader cost Gore the election, as stated above it was bought by the Bush family. Therefore I have nothing to ease my conscience about . My only regret is letting Al step aside without us fighting the good fight. The only thing that each of us should worry about now is how much time we have to right the problems our world faces. We don't have enough time to find another person that we can be sure feels so passionately about our world, and the generations to come. We must not waste more time debating on protocal. We need to act quickly and with purpose if we are going to start the world healing. Al is the only man TODAY that we can be sure understands the complexities of these problems that plague us. He is also the only person I know of who can work positively with other nations to right the problems we face as a world entity. If you just look around at the problems that plague our world right now, like infernos that have ripped across vast countries as in Greece and in the US itself, and the hurricanes that have come just this year alone, and the droughts that are worldwide, not to mention the wars that are threatening to drag us into another world war, You begin to see why we don't have time to find someone else with the qualities we all know Al has already. He is the only man who has dedicated himself to solving these problems. Do we have time to wait for another city to run out of water, as they have predicted 36 states will do in the next five years? I for one say NO!! We need Al in the President's office in 2009 and not a minute later. Half measures like electing Hillary or everyone else running who's allegences we cant be sure of is not an option. - 2 years ago

I don't deal with memes, but reality. And why is it then hard to understand why some would be happy for this man now after the hand he was dealt and see that he is making progress on doing this in an non status quo way unattached to the political rhetoric that dragged this issue down for so long? Campaigns aren't only about "polls" and "soundbites" and "winning" and it seems to me that many who call for Mr. Gore now are deliberately avoiding the more serious side to his doing so at this time as well. And for me that tends to make me believe there is more to this than what is being told. Matter of fact, according to an article in a NY paper yesterday, it would appear that some heads of draft groups are Nader supporters who now feel "guilt" for bringing us to this point. And in the article I read about this, they still wouldn't disavov their vote for Nader. So, what I think we have are Nader supporters who feel guilty and just want Mr.Gore to jump into this poltical fray to clear their consciences and be the pawn against the Democrats they don't like, and that is not a reason to give up all he has now just to give them a clear conscience. It is now about what is the best and most effective way to make progress on a climate crisis that has already passed the tipping point in many areas. So if you truly then want the job to be done you will allow him to do it as he sees fit and actually join him. Frankly, all of this political playing turns me off as well and we don't have time for it.

Hey Jan, have you ever thought for a second that those who want to see Gore as president just love their country and aren't, as you call us, "selfish." Is wanting to end the war, seeing single-payer health care enacted, and a carbon tax selfish? If it is, I certainly don't see how.
We want to see Gore run and win because only he a) stands for those things and b) has the experience and know-how to implement them. Why is that so hard for you to understand?

A very wise person recently called out the new Gore meme, which can be summarized here: "This seems to be the new line of attack. Hammer home the point that Gore will NOT run and then shower the former VP with praise and flowers, bow down and kiss his ring, salute him, build him a memorial... Just so it's clear, HE'S NOT RUNNING. Riiiight. I won't believe it until he says it." I think this person was right on the mark and the things you are saying seem to fit right into this. So were you part of starting this meme Jan or are you merely perpetuating it?

No, it isn't silly if you take it beyond politics and your own selfish agenda. But I suppose you then think Mr. Gore is silly since he has said all of the above as well. And if you don't think this process in Dc is toxic, then you haven't been paying attention. And oh yes, I am pushing an agenda: FOR MOTHER EARTH. BTW, for all of your begging of the good man, what is your carbon footprint? What do you to do daily address this crisis daily besides begging him to do something he is already doing? Politics does not work without PEOPLE who are informed and motivated PUSHING IT and CHALLENGING IT. He knows the score on that better than us after being in that muck for thirty years, and I support his work now to do that because we ALL need to see that moral imperative and start pushing or all is lost. Sorry you can't see it on that level.

That is a silly argument and usually only put out by someone who is trying to push someone elses agenda.
Everyone else I know that is seriious about this issue says Al Gore needs to run, because he has shown the passion, ideas and work to solve this and even Mr. Gore says we need the Leadership at the top to make these policies.
