Seattle legalized goats as pets last month largely under the banner of sustainability. The goats are required to be licensed just like a dog or cat and horns must be removed. Urban goat owners enjoy fresh milk and cheese daily. I can't wait to see a Prius with a goat in the back seat.

I had 13 goats growing up in a city, it may or may not have been within code but it was so great as a kid to have those animals around. I'm all for farm animals in the city.

Wow, that's really interesting. I have a big yard here in Wisconsin--I'd love to have a couple of little goats!

The only problem I can think of is that I believe that in order to keep milking a goat, you need to breed her every year. That's a lot of new goats, and the male ones can eat weeds and can tote your stuff around (google: goat-packing) but the majority of them in agriculture are, um, eaten.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to see a kid born (yeah, that's what you call a baby goat) and raise it for a while and then eat it. Maybe. I do eat meat, though I'm lucky to live in a place where I can buy directly from farmers. (In our freezer right now--a quarter grass-fed steer (152 pounds, not a huge steer), two runty lambs (27lbs and 33lbs) and four pretty big chickens (6-8lbs each). So, obviously I'm not averse to eating critters, I just don't know if I'm ready to hand over a cute baby goat to the butcher man. . .

    Food for thought!

I can see it now, scene at a dinner table: family of four and a goat, Mom squeezing an utter, filling glasses with milk and putting in front of the kids, one of the kids(human) starts feeding the goat his least favorite vegetable, the father starts yelling at the (human)kid," Damnit Jimmy, I told you not to feed the goat at the table!!!"

    haha

Seattle FTW, the city LBE's for the US in green ideas, good job

This is a great idea...now you can eat your feta cheese at every meal. Word is that food from your own toil and your own environment is much healthier for you anyway. Be forwarned, goats love to climb and will eat anything. So, if you see a goat or two standing on top of the car, don't be alarmed, they're probably just looking for a better view to scope out their next meal, the children's toys...

If you ask them whether they'd like to go to the butcher with you, they'll probably just answer... Naaahaahahaha...
